By Kevin Acee

    S.D. NEED: 3/10

The proven starter was hurt, so he is gone. Philip Rivers will get his chance after two seasons of watching and learning.

How quickly and how well Rivers adjusts to the speed of the NFL won't be known until at least September. The Chargers will spend the offseason and training camp trying to figure out what Rivers can and can't do, and they will (at least initially) tailor their offensive scheme accordingly.

Rivers' backup is A.J. Feeley, a former (if only briefly) starter for two NFL teams. This is not like having the security Doug Flutie or the promise Rivers provided behind Drew Brees, but Feeley is a veteran who has shown the ability to win games with the right talent around him.

The Chargers could spend a late pick to get a third quarterback, or they could wait until Monday or TueS.D.ay to sign one or two nondrafted free agents at the position.
