    Chargers end Demetrius Byrd experiment

Posted by Mike Florio on March 22, 2010 6:59 PM ET
Last year, the Chargers took a flier with a seventh-round pick on former LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd, who suffered serious injuries in a car accident only days before the 2009 draft.

Nearly a year later, the Chargers have decided to move on.

The team has announced that Byrd has been released. Says the statement from the team: "Despite the injuries, the Chargers selected him and generously extended him a contract for the season."
And that's the point where the Chargers blew, in our estimation, any goodwill resulting from their decision to take a chance on Byrd. It's not a charity; they drafted and paid him in the hopes that he'd fully recover, and that he'd become much more than any seventh-round pick ever is expected to be. He apparently hasn't recovered, and so the Chargers are moving on.

So why not just call it was it is, instead of attempting to make themselves look far more altruistic than they ever intended to be?

Meanwhile, we wish Byrd well -- and we hope he gets a chance to make a real contribution for an NFL team. Preferably the Broncos, Raiders, or Chiefs.

I wonder if the fact the Demetrius Byrd is on twitter 24/7 had anything to do with the Chargers decision?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Twitter **** was a reason why, that and I don't think he'd be ready for next season. Why pay him another year? Oh and FU Florio, dude likes ripping the Chargers, they must have made him look stupid many times.

Twitter page might have prompted Chargers to clip Byrd's wings

Posted by Mike Florio on March 22, 2010 9:10 PM ET
So why did the Chargers cut receiver Demetrius Byrd? We assumed it had a lot to do with his recovery, or lack thereof, from last year's auto accident.

But then a reader sent a link to Byrd's Twitter page.

Here's one of the entries: "Hey twitt fam is it gay to like justin bieber? Cuz I'm not gay but I'm feelin dat baby sng dat **** rockin right now on my cd also."

It was made earlier today. The same day the Chargers cut him.

Given that San Diego fined former cornerback Antonio Cromartie for complaining via Twitter regarding training camp cuisine, it wouldn't surprise us to learn that, once the Chargers say the Justin Bieber tweet, they decided that it was time to move on.

I've been wondering the same thing for a long time. Is that really him on Twitter?. For a guy trying to get a chance to play in the NFL, notwithstanding injury, he is writing some seriously stupid stuff.

As for this lad Florio?, can anyone understand what point he is trying to make or he just a complete moron?.

Seems to me the Chargers were v good to Byrd?. If he cannot play due to injury he cannot play period.

Florio is the ****. He reaches at times and does not care.

Byrd was an idiot posting naked chicks (from what I read) or whatever **** he was posting on his twitter account.

More and more employers are reviewing these social networking sites and using this information to ram up your ***.

I read an article where a high school teacher on a sabbatical to Europe posted a picture of her holding a glass of wine at a dinner table at some obscure restaurant.

    Guess what ?

    The teacher was fired.

The firing excuse was that it was inappropriate to suggest alcohol was an appropriate message to send to kids.

Yeah put that in your pipes and smoke it.

    Cover your ***. C.Y.A. :bolt:
