Chargers strong safety Clinton Hart agreed to terms on a new five-year contract Monday that will keep him in lightning bolts through the 2012 season.

“We are very happy to have Clinton as a part of our future,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said. “He was a first-year starter last year and was a major part of our team’s success. We believe his best football is ahead of him.”

After spending three seasons as a key reserve and special teams player with the Chargers, Hart became a full-time starter for the first time in 2007. He started all 16 regular-season games and all three playoff games at strong safety. During the regular season, Hart was the club’s third-leading tackler with 109 stops, trailing only Stephen Cooper and Matt Wilhelm. He also finished second on the team with five interceptions and tied for second with four tackles for loss.

Hart was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2008 season. The six-year veteran took the road less traveled to the NFL through the Arena Football League after not playing college football. For him, Monday was the culmination of years of sacrifice.

“It’s a day that I’ve been waiting for,” Hart said. “I’ve put in a lot of work. I feel blessed and I’m happy to be part of the Chargers for a few more years so we can make that run at a World Championship.”

Hart originally joined the Chargers in September, 2004 after he was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. In five NFL seasons, he’s played in 78 regular season games and started 31.

hart is good when he doesn't hesitate. God. I'm praying he jumps on recievers coming into his area from now on. He'd be pretty good if he did.

YOU can probably say for certain now that the chargers won't be picking up a first round saftey.

You know, this is a good move. A.J. and management really like Hart and he's worked real hard to get this and deserves it. Not spectacular, yet a solid performer. He's not going to ever be a probowler but he has the work ethic and attitude A.J. looks for and I trust A.J.'s judgement on signing players to long term deals. I still think we will be looking for a safety, but not as high on the draft board as we think. Don't matter though, A.J. does some of his best work in the 4th rounds and lower. That's where the real draft is. I love that line,

** Modified his actual quote to reflect multiple Rings.

worst case scenario is that we have a backup safety resigned long term

best case is he solidifies the SS position for a while as a solid steady performer

Considering his lack of high level football before his first NFL camp, he's come a long way. I strongly suspect he has more upside. At the very least we have three strong DB's, including Weddle, and with Hart back there, we have no soft spots in the secondary. Five picks last season ain't chopped liver.

Yeah, I'm good with this signing, too. Doesn't mean that we won't still be looking for quality DB's. I really think that we'll see better things from Hart with a guy like Weddle starting next to him instead of McCree.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disappointed he's resigned, but not overly thrilled either.

IMO, Hart is nothing more than an average player who makes a few nice plays a year. As long as he plays solid, fine w/ me, but I'm definately not doing cartwheels over this. I still think we need to look for another safety in the draft.

I saw Hart mixing it up a lot more at the line of scrimmage last year and with our front seven that's what we need. I hope it continues.

I tend to agree. Am happy for Clinton and his family - sounds like a fair deal to me. Nothing has changed as far as the draft, team needs, etc.

Seeing Clinton all season as a starter, he is a bend don't break safety who is a hard worker. If he hits and wraps and stays within the system, we should be fine. Go Bolts!!!:bolt:

Did hart say he'll work on not hesitating with his pass coverage from now on. He's just got to learn to pick up a reciever more quickly when he's in his area. If he could do that he might be good.
