SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer hired Clancy Barone as tight ends coach and Matt Simon as running backs coach Wednesday.

Barone replaces Rob Chudzinski, who left to become the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator. Simon replaces Clarence Shelmon, who was promoted to offensive coordinator after Cam Cameron left to become the Miami Dolphins' head coach.

Barone was Atlanta's tight ends coach the past two seasons, and the assistant offensive line coach in 2004. In San Diego, he will work with All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates, who was the Chargers' leading receiver last season with 71 catches for 924 yards and nine touchdowns. He spent the last two seasons tutoring the Falcons' leading receiver, star tight end Alge Crumpler.

Simon coached running backs for Baltimore from 1999-2005. He wasn't in coaching last season. He was the head coach at North Texas from 1994-97
