Fairchild returning to San Diego as Bolts assistant

The Chargers hired a former collegiate head coach and NFL offensive coordinator on Tuesday, naming Steve Fairchild to the post that will primarily consist of duties that lighten the load for Norv Turner during the week and on game days.

Fairchild, whose official title is senior offensive assistant/special assignments, spent the past four seasons as the head coach at Colorado State. He was fired in December after three straight three-win seasons. He spent the 2006 season and 2007 prior to his appointment at Colorado State, as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator. He was quarterbacks coach and assistant offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams from 2003-05.

Fairchild will spend games in the booth, alongside tight ends coach Jason Michael, who this past season helped Turner decide which calls to challenge via replay. Fairchild’s role will be similar to that of Rob Chudzinski, who in 2009 and ’10 helped Turner in game planning and running some meetings while Turner tended to other duties. Chudzinski left after 2010 to become the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator.

Fairchild will begin immediately in assessing the Chargers’ two-minute and third down offense, among other facets of play calling and game management.

Fairchild played quarterback at Patrick Henry High in mid-70s and was a junior college All-American at Mesa College before transferring to Colorado State.

He had two separate coaching stints at San Diego State, under Denny Stolz in 1986 and Al Luginbill from 1990-92.

The Chargers, as expected, promoted offensive line coach Hal Hunter to offensive coordinator. He takes over the spot held by Clarence Shelmon, who retired this month. Turner remains the offensive play caller. Hunter will continue to coach the offensive line along with assistant Mike Sullivan.

The Chargers will interview candidates this week to replace secondary coach Steve Wilks, who took the same job with the Panthers this weekend. They are considering current secondary assistant Cris Dishman, as well as a couple other candidates. One of those candidates is Ron Meeks, who Wilks replaced in Carolina.

Four paragraphs beginning with "Fairchild", and three beginning with "The Chargers"...... nice work, Kevin.

He was horrible here in Fort Collins. Didn't recruit well and tried to jam square pegs into round holes relative to personnel and schemes.
That said, 'senior offensive assistant/special assignments' in the NFL is different skill set than NCAA head coach.
He was not a good OC in Buffalo either.
THAT said, he just needs to advise Norv on when to call time out and kick arse/watch film during the week (let's hope he isn't the guy gameplanning).

EDIT: Oh wait, the article says he is going to be involved gameplanning. What the ****? This guy has been a failure for the past 5 years and now he's going to help with gameplanning...
