Could mean that Smitty is going to go nuts after Nick Perry.

My reason to be excited about drafting Perry is that it means that we signed a quality SS, WR, and OL in FA.

The same place your getting that "Smitty is going to go nuts after Nick Perry" !

What would hiring a coach from USC have anything to do with us drafting a DE from the same school ?

First, Smitty likes to go nuts after people. Second, people in general tend to feel more comfortable making significant decisions when they have a degree of comfort about the situation. Having a coach on the staff who has seen Perry in practice all year could have an impact on Smitty's decision making.

I didn't say that this hire made the drafting of Perry a mortal lock. I didn't even say that it would result in the Chargers drafting Perry. What I said was, that it COULD result in Smitty going nuts after him. Whether AJ likes him or not might be made completely moot on Mar. 5.

And I still have no idea how that makes Joe Barry our saving grace...

The "saving grace" was a tongue-in-cheek comment Ike, not meant to be taken so seriously mate, it is only Feb afterall.

But I do still fail to see how appointing a coach from any school would make anyone think it would effect AJ and his staff on what they will or wont be drafting.

We do have a staff of scouts afterall, who I'm sure are well aware of Perry's abilities and whether they are likely to work in our teams concept.

It's been a long time since I was active on a message board, and being new here, I've yet to learn from which corners the sarcasm tends to come.

I agree that we have scouts, but I think that having a defensive coach from his school on the current staff could give additional insight into how Perry practices and prepares. Like I said, it doesn't make Perry a mortal lock, but I think alot of how AJ Smith works is based on coveting individuals. Otherwise our drafts make no sense unless the entire scouting department is on Crystal Meth.

Now your making sense ....

If someone can hide the pipe from AJ come April 26th, we may actually make a pick in the first couple of rounds that will improve our football team for a change. ;)

Mind you, I think the FA acquistions will far outweigh the draft picks as far as next season is concerned, Norf has stated many times that he isn't a huge fan of playing rookies, which I have never understood to be quite honest, seems other teams do it quite successfully, but not Norf.

This is the same Joe Barry from the 0-16 Detroit Lions. He was their def coord that season... he was the coaches son-in-law.

This guy was so terrible in Detroit that I can't see how he ever got another NFL job... but then I said that about Kevin Gilbride, too.

He was also the LB coach for the bucs when they won the super bowl and he helped developed multiple pro bowlers, including Derrick Brooks

We could do alot worse for a LB coach

Don't worry guys, if our LBers blow this season, I'll approach the Chargers about hiring me to be the LBers coach. That way we can establish a true lowpoint from which anything actually is an improvement :-D

LBs are only as good as the drafted back-up QB, a drafted broken legged WR, a over priced FB/SP player.

Just because he failed as the DC in Detroit doesn't mean he sucks at any imaginable NFL coaching position.

Dick LeBeau sucked as a head coach but is doing just fine as Pittsburgh's DC.

Marty Morningwhig sucked as Detroit's HC and is doing just fine as OC in Philly.

(I'm sure there are some examples of sucking as a coordinator and doing good as a position coach but I don't pay much attention to other teams' position coaches.)

And Norv sucked as a head coach and now... he still sucks as a head coach. (But he was a good O-coord).
