By Steve Scholfield

SAN DIEGO ---- It was little more than a flag football game, but to the Chargers fans looking on, it quenched a lingering thirst.

After all, local fans haven't experienced any on-the-field football for 161 days. That's the last time they saw their Chargers in action, a New Year's Eve 23-7 loss to Denver that marked the start of Philip Rivers' career here and the end of Drew Brees' reign as the team's starting quarterback.

Saturday was the first of two days of open practices, and judging by the spirited reception the Chargers received, their fans cherish them despite a 9-7 record that wasn't good enough to make the playoffs last season.
