The initial tests on injured Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding reveal he’s likely out for the season with a left anterior cruciate ligament tear, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Kaeding was injured on the opening kickoff Sunday against the Vikings, which Percy Harvin returned 103 yards for a touchdown.

Kaeding will have an MRI exam in the morning to confirm the condition, but the Chargers aren’t hopeful of positive results.

Bummer. But as I stood in my seat and watched it happen, seeing him limp off the field, and then being carted off a few moments later, I knew it was bad. Wondered at that time if Scifres could even kick FG's.

Acee said that they are not going to IR him. If this is the case then we need to cut someone when a kicker is signed. Who get's the ax?

The insanity of not IR'ing Kaeding and saving him for the playoffs is staggering. No way Acee can be right on that one.

Let the kid sit out the year and get healthy.

Seeing as how well Kaeding does in the playoff, I doubt this situation he is currently in will help any. We need to IR him and just pick up a new kicker.

LOL saving a roster spot for Kaeding just in case we need him IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Bum deal for Nate. At least he can't be blamed for missing the playoffs this year.

Chargers targeting veteran kicker. Nick Novak, who was here last summer, is in San Diego. I believe he is the target. 25 minutes ago · reply · retweet ·

His kicking in College is irrelevent. The fact is he was the holder on FGs. That had to be worked through.

I imagine Weddle was taking practice snaps on the sideline to prepare for the holder position.

There is far more to kicking a FG than hitting the ball with a foot.

Novak could step in for Kaeding in San Diego

Veteran Nick Novak is a strong candidate to replace injured Nate Kaeding as the kicker in San Diego.

The Chargers are very familiar with Novak, a college standout at Maryland who has had stints in the NFL with Washington, Dallas and elsewhere. He had a previous stint in San Diego and the Chargers tried to sign him last year out of the UFL, where he was special teams player of the year, but stipulations in the UFL contract structure scuttled the deal.
Novak is coming off a strong preseason, where he pushed Nick Folk for the job with the Jets and he is already living and training in San Diego, where he was born.
The Chargers have made initial contact with Novak and could bring in several kickers for a competition, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Novak gets the job.
Kaeding suffered what the team fears was a torn ACL on the opening kickoff Sunday, with punter Mike Scifreshanding kicking duties on an emergency basis.

I don't think his kicking in college is irrelevant. It's experience, however insignificant people my think it is, it is relevant. Would he be kicking field goals if he didn't know how to or had never done so before?

I would assume we have fail safes in place for what happened yesterday w/ Nate going down just as I'm sure we have a backup emergency QB for our emergency QB.

I doubt we have fail safes for kickers going down, or Scifi would have been practicing punts. Which he has not.

So you're saying the team has absolutely no backup plan if Scifres gets hurt in a game and we need someone to punt? That they have no clue who can punt and have never discussed the possibility of what to do if an injury to MS happened? Really?

BTW Scifres IS the backup plan for Kaeding and has been since Scifres has been here, just like David Binn was out 4th string QB.

Should give Dave Rayner a look. He was with Lions last year and did rather well.
