    Bleacher Report
    By Jeremy Beckett

    August 1, 2010

The last piece was finally put into the RFA holdout puzzle as Ryan Mathews signed his contract today with the San Diego Chargers. As his signature hit the contract, the giant impact was felt throughout Chargers headquarters.
Now the Chargers know exactly what they can offer all of their restricted free agents.
    Let the games begin.
As Iv'e predicted all along, Mathews would have to sign his contract before RFA holdouts would even be discussed. Simply put. Without knowing how much roster salary Mathews would eat into the Chargers salary cap, no offers could be made to McNeill, Jackson or Merriman.
Now we have a cut and dry pay scale to see exactly the picture in San Diego. We have a complete outline of last years salary departures, and their replacements.
I will give a complete and detailed breakdown of exactly what Chargers GM, A.J Smith is looking at. Lets first examine the Chargers 2009 total salary space for the entire roster.
Also weigh into heavy consideration, the Chargers also saw 59 players see action last season due to injury. This drove up total salary substancially.
Lets examine the Chargers players salaries first as a team—

    Year Total Salary
    2002 60,656,461
    2003 73,230,536
    2004 76,253,021
    2005 78,729,437
    2006 99,782,506
    2007 102,460,685
    2008 111,813,340
    2009 115,264,155

The price index has jumped the Chargers roster allotment 54,607,695 over the past 8 years.
If following this pattern on an average base, the Chargers allot an annual increase of 6,825,961 dollars a year.
Given all the variables, ratios and equations, A.J Smith is looking at a 2010 roster sheet of $ 122,090,116.
    Last years roster included—

    Philip Rivers
    Signing bonus $ 19,550,000

Okay Chargers fans, lets go shopping!

    Lets start with the Draft.
Player Contract Price Sign Bonus annual
Ryan Mathews 5 years, 25.6 mil $5.11 mil
    Donald Butler 4 years, $2.598M; $808,500 $640,320
    Darrell Stuckey 4 years, $2.296M, $506K $574,000
    Cam Thomas 4 years, $1.981M $191,300 $495,250
    Jonathon Crompton 4 years N/A N/A $500,000
    Dedrick Epps 4 years, $1.838M, $48K $459,500

Total annual salary paid to the draft class $7,769,070
plus total signing bonuses to be paid out $1,553,800
Total expense for all drafted class 2010 $9,322,870
    Subtracted from starting balance: 35,573,040
    Total: 26,250,170

    Step 2
    In house raise and tenders
    Antonio Gates 2010 salary 5,100,000
    Antonio Gates 2009 salary 3,256,000
    Difference: 1,844,000

    Malcom Floyd 2010 salary 3,168,000
    Malcom Floyd 2009 salary 1,551,630
    Difference: 1,616,370

    Darren Sproles 2010 salary 7,283,000
    Darren Sproles 2009 salary 6,667,230
    Difference: 615,730

    Travis Johnson 2010 salary 1,226,000
    Travis Johnson 2009 salary 1,037,280
    Difference: 188,720

    Total Raises: $ 4,264,820
    Subtracted from $26,250,170
After in house raises: 21,985,350 annual salary

    Step 3
    Players acquired with written contracts
CB Donald Strickland , FA Jets for 2 years
    2009 salary=$1,000,000

CB Nate Vasher , FA Bears for $4.5M/2 yrs.
    Total annual salary=$2,250,000

    26,250,170
    - 3,250,000 annual for Strickland and Vasher
    Total left $23,000,170

Randy McMichael will join Antonio Gates, Kris Wilson, and Dedrick Epps as a fourth Tight end. All of those guys are heavily contracted. Do you think Smith will pay $3,850,000 total salary to McMichael? Thats what he made last year.
    My take, no way!
So basically, right now Smith sits with $23,000,170 less salary than he spent last year.
He could afford Vincent Jackson at a 5 yr/35 million dollar contract. That would cut the average annual salary cap space down 7 mil per year.
With the other 16,000,170, he could offer McNeill a five year 40 million dollar deal. That would knock the salary cap down to $8,000,170.
He could offer Merriman a five yr/25 million dollar contract. That would knock the annual cap down to 3 million left. At this point, he wouldn't need Tra Thomas, or Josh Reed, and use the other 3 million to sign all the undrafted. This would put him under last years budget.

Only question is, would Jackson play for 7 million/year, would McNeill play for 8 million/year, and would Merriman play for 5 million/year.
Oops, silly me. I almost forgot that pescy little price index.
This will give The Chargers $6,825,961 more annual dollars to play with. Looks like we can actually give these guys exactly what theyr'e asking. I'll be damned!
There is a reason none of these guys were cut or traded. Now we could really get down to business! The cats out of the bag and the numbers are all on the table.
Unless the Chargers are going to put a team on the field to match a 2003 price index, wer'e going to be reading about some contracts soon.

Sounds good on paper could it be true I don't know what say you... :icon_shrug:

Of the 3, I really want to see McNeill get done ASAP. Then Shawne. VJ can go F*** himself.

Shawne hasn't done anything stupid, it's more of him wanting to know he has a job here for the time being, VJax is a buster whether or not he's here is fine by me. Would I like to see him on the field? Yes. But that probably would mean him getting into some sort of off the field trouble and then we don't have him again.

Shawne has deliver for this team in the past up until his injury. Other than getting popped for roids (IMO everyone is on it and I really dont care if they are), he has not been an issue for the team and has been a lockerroom leader since his rookie year. The Tila thing was a friggin joke too which I don't blame him for other than using bad judgement associating w/ a turd like her. Pay him this year and pray he becomes the old Shawne again.

VJ has been carried by the team for years waiting for him his bruised vagina to heal, and for him to finally develop into a big time reciever. Then he has 2 great years filled with dumbass moments on the field sprinkled here and there (the biggest coming in the Jets game last playoffs). Not to mention he's a drunk w/ a revoked liscense who is too stupid to call for a car to get to the biggest game of his career. Let him walk/trade him for whatever you can get.

I would have to agree 100 to this. VJ to Wash and watch out for the Rat and his best ever pack if it happens.

Dont get me wrong VJ deserves to get his due he waited paitently. BUT he does need to prove that he is past the stupid off field drinking issues. I mean WTF they have a safe ride home for NFL players program... dont be ashamed to have to call for a escort home from a commoner u dumb *** big stars...

    That is all.

That's cool and I totally get everyone who wants us to keep Jackson, I wouldn't be upset if we did, I'm just not losing any sleep over him if we don't.

IMO Vincent Jackson is the most important of the 3 by a wide margin.....but the realistic side of me knows that he is probably done in San Diego and we'll be seeing him week 10 at the earliest.

I've stated repeatedly on here that MM is overrated....I think the team is better overall with him in the lineup...but he's no all-pro type player and shouldn't be compensated like one.....the realistic side of me says that AJ sees him as the lowest character risk of the 3 and that he wouldn't mind giving some of VJ or Shawne's money to him just to say F off to the other two.

I don't think AJ likes Shawne....at all. All of his off-the-field media whore stuff and shenanigans with the likes of Tila Tequila probably have AJ wanting to get him off the team ASAP...as long as he gets some value. Shawne will never get paid here. He could have 20 sacks next year and we'll kick him to the curb. I don't think AJ really cares too much if Shawne reports or not...I think SM will show up after he closes out his off-season social calendar...and plays one last year in a rotation with the other OLB's before some team like Washington massively overpays him next year.

AJ, SM, VJ and MM all seem to have painted themselves into their respective corners. The only guy I see with a shot at negotiations is McNeil. Merriman could get a one year deal and maybe an extension if he plays well, but that looks unlikely. If he misses training camp along with all the time he's missed as a starter, he's going to have a whole lot of rust and he won't be in playing shape. VJ is not going to be missed as much a some people think and AJ appears to know this. I'm not sure that VJ and SM are covalent with the team's chemistry right now. They've made themselves into prima donnas.

You guys crack me up. You all act as if you have never messed up. I had a DUI when I was his age and I learned my lesson. You guys say this crap when you leave the park on sunday with a 12 pack of beers in you. You will all be sorry if VJ is on another team next year. I keep saying it. This guy is a freak. He is not in an elite receiver class. He IS the elite. Go back and watch video of some of his plays. The sync that he and PR have is retarded. He is big, very tall, physical, fast and catches everything. A couple cases of the dropsy's is all it takes to kill the passing game confidence. With VJ, that is almost not even a thought.

It's not a matter of what he does on the field. You seem to have learned your lesson, but VJax has demonstrated that he hasn't. One DUI is bad enough, but two? Get your **** together man, you're a professional athlete. Stay out of trouble and you get paid the big bucks. Is the team better with Jackson? Most certainly, but if not life DOES go on. Are we supposed to change our goals just because we lose a really good player? Hell no. As I said, life goes on whether or not he is suited up pending his suspension. If there's one thing I've learned as a Chargers fan the last few years it's that when Rivers is at the helm, there is always a way to win the game.

The Chargers might be trying to save a lot of Money when the new CBA is reached so the Bolts will not be in Salary Cab Hell as it were.

If any of the players that are possibly resigned as my opinion it will be MM because of there is only the Health concerns to deal with.

I'm still kinda fu.ck him, I say that Rivers is good enough to where we don't need Jackson for anything. His off the field actions outweigh his on field heroics.
