Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman spent some time this offseason resting and rehabbing his shoulder in Maryland. Still not 100 percent after February surgery to repair a torn labrum, he predicted he would be so by training camp. He was not slowed at all in minicamp. Merriman has achieved his goal of getting leaner but has some work to on his strength due to the time spent resting the shoulder.

That was REALLY SMART of Shawne, to state that as an objective before the offseason got under way.

Shawne would've been all healed by now if this was LAST offseason.

Leaner, does not mean smaller. Last I seen, Shawne still looked beastly.

HE looked pretty freakin' big on NFLN the other day. Yes, leaner, but still a large, intimidating man.

When he gets his full strength, which won't be terribly difficult, leaner will mean quicker and just a tad faster dropping off in coverage or getting past the line of scrimmage into the backfield. There are some positions where more beef can help, like with Malcolm. Shawne doesn't need the extra beef.

Very true. Can you imagine him with a quicker first step? Sack record, here comes Mr. Merriman!! :abq2:

The sack record would be great, I really would like to see him step in switching off on pass coverage so they can effectively disguise a DB blitz or an inside blitz.

Hope too that he keeps better awareness this year and doesn't run himself out of position when they run off tackle plays and sweeps to his side like he did at times last year :bolt:
