The official message is that the Chargers are comfortable with who they have. They just might not know who exactly they have and where they might have them.

The situation at both offensive tackle spots is definitely fluid one game into the preseason, as Tyronne Green has officially been inserted into the mix.

While the odds remain good that Brandyn Dombrowski and Jeromey Clary will start at left and right tackle, respectively, the coaches are considering other scenarios.

"We've got a lot of options, and I just think the best five guys on the field is what we're going to try to do," head coach Norv Turner said Tuesday morning. "We've got time to experiment a little bit ... It's competitive."

Dombrowski played well last year at right tackle, starting the final seven games after Clary broke his ankle. Were Marcus McNeill in camp, Dombrowski and Clary would be engaged in a battle for the starting job on that side.

    They may still be.

For the first time this camp, Clary worked some reps with the second team at right tackle, alternating first-team work with Dombrowski. Green worked every first-team snap at left tackle, while Tra Thomas took the second-team reps there.

Green, who was drafted as a guard and who is likely to make his money there in the future, has impressed the Chargers outside with his long arms and adequate athleticism. He has worked exclusively at tackle this summer, first at right and then left when Dombrowski missed three days last week with a mild groin strain.

"Tyronne is a good player, and he's worked really well at right tackle," Turner said. "And Jeromey is having a great camp."

Dombrowski started at left tackle in the preseason opener Saturday, working two series. Green replaced him and worked the next four series. Dombrowski played the second quarter and part of the third at right tackle.

While acknowledging there could be changes, Turner also said the machinations on the line are an attempt to solidify depth in the event of a rash of injuries like the one that beset the line last season.

"One reason we're doing this is the experience we had last year and having guys having to go play at different spots at the drop of the hat," Turner said. "If that happens at some time in this season, I don’t think we’ll skip a beat."

The Chargers find themselves in this quandary due to the continued contract stalemate between them and McNeill, who does not want to risk injury as he continues to strive for a long-term contract. McNeill and receiver Vincent Jackson have not signed their one-year restricted free agent tenders and are expected to stay away from the Chargers perhaps through the season.
