Chargers, Mathews down to details in contract haggling
BY KEVIN ACEE, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

    SUNDAY, AUGUST 1, 2010 AT 12:01 A.M.

The Chargers are down to haggling over details with their first-round draft pick’s agent, and Ryan Mathews could join the team for this afternoon’s practice.

Mathews is one of just six players taken in the top 20 who hasn’t signed. But it’s difficult to label him a holdout when the team did not initiate negotiations until the morning that training camp began.

“Hopefully, we will see him soon,” was all Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith would say when asked for an update.

    He can do it

Antoine Cason is all about consistency and doing his part, something the Chargers are looking forward to after the sometimes spectacular, oft-out-of-place Antonio Cromartie.

But don’t tell Cason, whose 15 career interceptions are fourth-most all-time at the University of Arizona, he is all substance and no flash.

“When I’m out there, that’s what I try to do — change games,” said Cason, who made one of three interceptions in Saturday afternoon’s practice. “I’m just not trying to do it every play.”

What has become clear about Cason over the spring and summer, as he has taken over for Cromartie as the starting right cornerback, is that he does his job, often influencing the flow of a play in ways that go largely unseen.

“There are 10 other guys out there trying to accomplish something,” he said. “If someone makes a play across the field because of something I did, that’s fine with me.”

    Bring it on

“Back to Football” is the theme on all the banners at Chargers Park this training camp. On Monday, the football goes back to football. Things intensify today when players report to the practice field for the first time in pads.

“Exciting,” said safety Eric Weddle. “All the holding and the pushing kinda goes out the door, and you actually can get in some work. It’s more for the linemen, because we don’t do that much, but the inside guys and the linebackers will start banging and really get the rust off. We’ll get in a little hitting, too, get our shots in.”

Head coach Norv Turner said the implementation of pads for the first time in training camp always has a major effect on the atmosphere and attitudes.

“It makes them a lot more competitive, a lot more physical,” said Turner. “It changes it completely. Obviously, it gets more emotional, then the young guys will get moving faster and forget some of the things they knew before they put the pads on.”

    Nuts ’n’ Bolts

•While it appears free-agent rookie Jeremy Williams is the early leader in the competition for fifth receiver — and didn’t hurt himself with outstanding catches in each of Saturday’s two sessions — Gary Banks is also making a strong bid after two years on the Chargers’ practice squad. In the afternoon session, Banks twice outran the secondary and chased down overthrown footballs for receptions, the first with a full-out dive to grab it just above the ground.

•Traye Simmons, an undrafted cornerback working with the third team, made his third interception of the week.

•Tra Thomas took snaps with the first team. Turner wants both Thomas and Brandyn Dombrowski to get work with the starters
