The Chargers got smacked around in Chicago tonite- 24-3 Bears- There are no other words for it. San Diego was beaten in every phase of the game, and has much work to do heading into week 3 of the preseason. The game was played in a steady rain, before a less than sellout Chicago crowd.

Sometimes you get the Bear, sometimes the Bear gets you, ask San Diego QB Phillip Rivers, who last week against Green Bay was flawless. That was last week.

On Rivers second pass attempt of the night, Bears All Pro LB Brian Urlacher introduced Rivers to the NFL, Monsters of the Midway style. Somewhere, Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary are smiling.

Urlacher intercepted Rivers toss, and rumbled 64 yards for the score- 7-0 Bears.
OUCH. At least Rivers didnt suffer a shoulder seperation trying to make the tackle.

DE Igor Olshansky got in San Diegos first sack of the night, with a launching into Rex Grossman's face. This is a good sign, as the Chargers need desperately for the D-line to get pressure on the QB.

RB Michael Turner showed once again why he is the best back up RB in the NFL. Turner made an AMAZING run, running over several Bears on his way to a 45 yard gain, positioning the Bolts for a 43 yard field goal from K Nate Kaeding.
    7-3 Bears

Chicago rookie WR Rashied Davis made his presence known on the ensuing kickoff, tearing throught the Charger Special Teams for a 100 yard TD kickoff return. Davis continues to make a name for himself this preseason, at San Diego's expense of course...
    14-3 Bears.

Davis faked Charger kicker Nate Kaeding right out of his shoes, all Kaeding tackled was the FIELD. San Diego cannot afford to give away TD's, and hopefully, the coaching staff will make adjustments.

Phillip Rivers night ended after Chicago DE Adewale Ogunleye delivered a crushing hit on him, causing an incomplete on third down. Rivers finished up the evening 9-14 for 75 yards and a pick. The Chargers wisely pulled him, as the Bears were getting pressure consistantly on the pocket.

Chargers new DB Marlon McCree made his first pick of the preseason, denying the Bears a TD late in the second quarter. McCree read Grossman perfectly, and hauled in the interception at the San Diego 1 yard line.

The half ended at 14-3 Chicago, proving my theory that the Packers played like a bad team with a new head coach..
Chicago has a clue, and a plan, slowing San Diego's offense down to a crawl, while finding all the cracks in the Chargers pass defense, for all to see. The Bears were playing at a much higher intensity level than Green Bay did, a credit to Bears head honcho Lovie Smith. Smith has completely turned around a downtrodden Bears franchise, returning to the days of Halas, with big play defense, and smothering offense. Watch out for the Bears... or at least have a couple on your fantasy team...

    Charger Special teams allowed another big play, with Bears return specialist Devin Hester returning P Mike Scifres kick 42 yards, to the San Diego 38. This is frustrating, because any good NFL team will exploit weak special teams every time. Pittsburgh beat the Bolts last year because they out executed San Diego on special teams. In the playoffs, that's a fatal flaw, one the Chargers better get after, pronto. ( I got to use pronto :}

Bears backup QB Brian Griese took advantage on the excellent field position, firing a 9 yard TD strike to WR Justin Gage. 21-3 Bears- My pre game prediction of 35-14 Chargers is pretty much shot... ya think?

The third quarter of this game was audition time, as usual, with both teams trotting out the rest of their squads. Chicago converted a 3rd quarter ending fumble by Charger RB Croom into a 4th quarter 49 yard FG by Bears K R. Gould.
    24-3 Da Bearsss-

San Diego is SANDBAGGING this one- lulling the other teams into a false sense of security...Its actually a good strategy here in the preseason, showing a vanilla offense and a basic defense. Who cares about the score? Lets just get the Chargers to RAIDER WEEK, ready and healthy.

Chargers third round pick QB Charlie Whitehurst, of Clemson, came in for Rivers after the near sack, back in the 2nd quarter, and finished out the game. Whitehurst is getting the reps that QB AJ Feeley was scheduled for, and im sensing a retooling of the depth chart.

Whitehurst, and RB L.Croom led the Chargers on a drive from the San Diego 2- to the Bears 13, only to end up with Whitehurst intercepted in the Chicago end zone by Jason Harmon.

The final gun sounded at 24-3 bears, and thats a pretty accurate score. Chicago scored 4 different ways, with an interception td, a kickoff return td, a td pass and a field goal.

U G L Y, and yet i think the Chargers are playing possum...

Next up- Seattle Seahawks 8pm at the Q- good luck with the parking....
