HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Forget all that talk about the San Diego Chargers' season hinging on the right arm of Philip Rivers.

"First of all, we've got the best defense in the league," one of its members, Shawne Merriman, said the other day. "Philip doesn't have to do too much."

Merriman's quieter complement, Luis Castillo, didn't disagree. They were having lunch with reporters at an Italian restaurant to promote the start of training camp, which for Chargers veterans was Friday, and they exuded the self-assurance born of rookie success.</blockquote>
