SAN DIEGO ---- Few can recall a Chargers exhibition home opener with so many juicy story lines, especially for an AFC West defending champion. But the Chargers limber up this afternoon against the St. Louis Rams at Qualcomm Stadium with a boatload of issues.

    # Welcome to a Chargers world without tight end Antonio Gates in its orbit. He remains an unsigned Pro Bowler.

    # Kicker Nate Kaeding will try to slice away his current nickname, "Captain Hook." He's been unable to convert a field goal in his past four attempts, which includes three in the recent loss to the Green Bay Packers, and the game-winner against the New York Jets in January's AFC playoff game.

    # The Chargers pull the covers off top pick Shawne Merriman, as the outside linebacker makes his NFL debut. Merriman, the draft's 12th overall selection, was sidelined in the exhibition opener with a strained hamstring.</blockquote>
