On the backs of Merriman, Phillips, and Castillo, the Chargers have an AFC best 21 sacks in 5 games.

This is #2 in the NFL.

Only the Eagles have more, with 23, and they didn't get any versus the Saints. So their 23 sacks came in their first 5 games.

We are on pace for a 60+ sack season!

    Most Sacks, Season
    72 Chicago, 1984
    71 Minnesota, 1989
    70 Chicago, 1987

Sacks were only being kept as an official stat since 1982.

So, there may have been teams prior to 1982 that had more than 72 in a year, but no official documentation to prove it.
