The Chargers placed rookie running back Curtis Brinkley on “Reserve – Non-football Injury” Friday.

“Unfortunately, Curtis is not ready to help us in camp at this point,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “We’re going to monitor this situation and see what unfolds in the future regarding Curtis.”

Brinkley was shot in his hometown of Philadelphia on July 10 while sitting in a car waiting to pick up his sister from work. He was released from the hospital two weeks ago but is not physically ready to get back on the football field.

The 5-9, 208-pound Brinkley signed with the Chargers as an undrafted rookie free agent in April. He rushed for 1,164 yards and seven touchdowns last fall at Syracuse.

The Chargers signed former Florida running back Kestahn Moore Friday to take Brinkley’s spot on the active roster. Moore is an undrafted free agent who spent time with the Denver Broncos this spring.

I hope Brinkley is able to get his body right and then get a shot at football - if not with us then with someone - a truly unfortunate situation.
