"Hopefully that'll change come the first, second game," said rookie Charlie Whitehurst, who was so impressive in winning the job as Philip Rivers' backup that the Chargers released veteran A.J. Feeley.

Even so, this quarterback trio is greener than the field it practices on. Rivers will make his first career start on Sept. 11 at Oakland. Behind Whitehurst is another rookie, Brett Elliott, a free agent who started his college career at Utah and ended it at Division III Linfield College.</blockquote>
