FS Eric Weddle (knee) will not play at Cleveland, allowing C.J. Spillman to play safety for the first time in an NFL game, Norv Turner said. The undrafted free agent from Marshall has played well on special teams.

Norv Turner said that veteran RT Jon Runyan, signed last week after Jeromey Clary's season-ending injury, is close to being ready to play but probably will not start at Cleveland on Sunday.

Norv Turner said he envisions 20-25 snaps for C Nick Hardwick on Sunday in Cleveland if Hardwick has a good week of practice. The former Pro Bowler has been out since injuring his ankle in the season opener.

Like every other Browns opponent, the Chargers are obsessed with stopping Josh Cribbs, a return specialist and running back. "I've seen more of Cribbs than I'd like to," Norv Turner said. The Bengals kicked away from Cribbs. Turner said the Chargers will prepare to defend Cribbs in the wildcat formation.

DE Luis Castillo, who missed Sunday's game because of a calf strain, worked out today and "has a chance" to face the Browns on Sunday, Norv Turner said -- but Turner said he'd like to see more of rookie Vaughn Martin, who played 10 snaps against Kansas City.

I saw a little of Spillman in preseason, training camp, and on special teams play, kid has a motor and can lay the wood on people. Like anyone else in this league, give him a chance to showcase what he can do, and wish him the best.

Given that we are already set at safety, I am more interested in seeing what Vaughn Martin can showcase...he is a big son-of-a-gun, and if he has the skills to match, he can perhaps make a case for more playing time.

having vaughn martin on the field doesnt help us at safety...

We are fortunate Nick doesn't have to go against Rogers too!!! We need to get our vets healthy come playoff time, I don't want another New England. I do like seeing our young guys getting PT and it not costing us games. Vaughn Martin may be a crucial cog in our D next year, its always a good thing to get him and Ellison snaps.

Spillman is a guy I hope we can keep if even only for special teams. He plays with the abandon required for ST.

    I agree on Spillman.

The team's coaches have already shown that with hard work, a player can make it from the ST to the regular offense/defense lineup.

Cases in point: Malcolm Floyd, Tim Dobbins, Brandon Siler, Legedu Naanee, Steve Gregory, Paul Oliver

All began with most of their playing time covering kicks on ST, and are now regularly playing on offense and defense as well.

I am forced to disagree. The impact of a big mean lineman can affect the secondary. Their pressure on the QB helps safety play a lot, it also ties up the O linemen so that they have much less time to worry about the safety blitz.

We know how Rivera loves the safety blitz!!! :abq2: :abq1:

Right with ya on this, Pointy. I think the kid has some talent & really hope to see him get a few reps while Weddle is down.

Set at safety my ***. We look much better, but there's always room for improvement & you never know who may be the next guy to get injured.

As for Martin - I'm in this kid's camp as well & hope to see him get a real head start on 2010.

I haven't heard much about martin since TC, is he still showing the desire and fire he had in the early stages of training? I'd love to see this kid flourish and become a force to be reckoned with.

It's funny, my brother called me and I brought this kids name up before the game against the Chef's. I didn't see much of the preseason games but from what I recalled, he liked to stick his head in there. Who knows he could be another diamond in the rough type find.

I'm not going to take the brown's lightly, but, this is a good game for us to get some guy's going and ready for the stretch drive. They want to win down to a man I'm sure and we still need to win and keep the pressure on the Donk's.

We have been thin along the d-line since Jamal went down. This last week was the first time Martin was even on the active roster in the last five or six weeks. That should tell you something about where he is at, development wise.

Unique physical specimen yes, but he's still light years from being a productive NFL starter. You want to watch a clinic on how to get pancaked? Check out Martin's preseason tapes.

The guy still has all the potential in the world and I don't think anyone expected him to be a starter, or even much of a contributor, this year. But I will be shocked if he cracks the starting lineup before 2011.

Martin is still RAW, but Cleveland would be a good place to get him some reps, especially to spell people later in the game. This is a perfect game to get him Ellison and Oliver and even Spillman some valuable time. Love to see Kassim get some time at receiver, too.

I was asking more if he's still Gung-Ho as first reported. I'm hoping he turns out to be the monster we all crave to see wrecking havoc against offensive lines. I do agree, this is the time to get the kid's some game action and prepped for the stretch run.

Just a casual reminder that the Browns are still an NFL Football team... If we treat this game like a scrimmage we're going to lose. Bank it.

    You're absolutely right, IAD.

I find myself tending to look primarily at the opportunity to rest some key players & get reps for those down the depth chart. I certainly hope that the team isn't looking at it the same way or we could find ourselves right back in deep caca.

I was thinking the same myself yesterday. You have to question the player's mindset goin into this game, having won 6 in a row. It could be very easy to look past these guys at Dallas and get banana skinned.

Methinks Norv will do his best to keep their eye on the ball. Some of em no doubt will be overconfident and have their pants pulled down. A W is all I'm looking for.

Indeed. The Browns' fans are feeling really down in the mouth about this game. Most board posts read like this...

I sure hope the Chargers keep focus and don't look past this game or they are likely to leave Ohio with a black eye and bloody nose.

I don't think anyone is advocating to sit the starters and play the 2nd & 3rd stringers. To work them in here and there like most teams do with inexperienced player's unless forced to do otherwise.

Martin got what 10 snaps against the Chef's, that's what I'm talking about.

Agree 100% but while we need to prepare fully for them, we don't have to push our injured players into a game against a laugher.

    Runyan’s status

Turner said earlier this week that Brandyn Dombrowski[IMG] will start at right tackle again this week, but Jon Runyan[IMG] could see his first action as a Charger.
“I thought he had a good day today,” Turner said of the 14-year veteran. “If we’re in the same position in terms of feeling good about where he’s at Friday, he could play some on Sunday.”
Runyan was inactive last week against the Chiefs after joining the Chargers last Tuesday. While physically ready, Runyan is learning a new offense for the first time in 10 years.

    In the rotation

With Castillo inactive last week, defensive end Vaughn Martin[IMG] dressed for the first time in six weeks. Turner believes the rookie grew a lot during that time.
“I think just having seen what it was like to play and then getting back and going through the practices like he has, it’s been good for him,” Turner said. “He goes against our offensive line every day in practice. He’s either going against Marcus or Dielman or Vasquez depending on where we put him. I think he’s learned a lot about playing and I think he’s a lot better.”
When the Chargers selected the former Canadian college star in the fourth round of April’s draft, their initial plan was to bring Martin along slowly. Injuries along the defensive line forced him to action early in the season, but a healthy rotation up front has allowed Martin to take a step back. He sees how he’s benefitted from that.
“I just feel like I’ve had a chance to watch these guys, what they do and how they prepare,” Martin said. “I really just want to contribute to a win and help my team where they need me and when they need me.”
