    Chargers re-sign Rich Ohrnberger
Veteran center-guard played both spots in 2013
    By Michael Gehlken

Depth on the interior offensive line stood as a Chargers draft need.

On Wednesday, the team used free agency to help address it.

Center-guard Rich Ohrnberger returned to the club, signing a one-year contract. The deal is his second straight one-year pact with San Diego and comes after a visit last week with the Jets.

Last year, the veteran proved his worth.

Ohrnberger, 28, quickly endeared himself among offensive linemen for his sense of humor, but during training camp, his versatility proved most valuable. He earned a roster spot in large part for his ability to play both center and guard.

In January, he stepped in for center Nick Hardwick during a playoff win in Cincinnati after Hardwick exited the first quarter with a stinger and concussion. In Week 4, he started at right guard for Jeromey Clary in a win against the Cowboys.

For his career, Ohrnberger has five starts over 31 regular-season appearances.

Eight offensive linemen played at least 100 snaps for the Chargers in 2013. With Ohrnberger's return, all eight are under contract with the club.

The signing, however, brings no clarity to the unit's long-term picture.

Of the eight, left guard Chad Rinehart and right tackle D.J. Fluker are the only ones not entering a contract year. Left tackle King Dunlap, Hardwick, Clary, reserve left guard Johnnie Troutman, swing tackle Michael Harris and now Ohrnberger are in their final contracted season.

    Uncertainty also still surrounds Clary.

The Chargers restructured outside linebackers Dwight Freeney and Jarret Johnson's contracts as well as wide receiver Eddie Royal. No action, though, has yet come on Clary. He's due to earn a $4.55 million base salary and count $6.25 million against the 2014 cap.

This is the final leg of a four-year contract the former right tackle signed in 2011.

    Chargers waive NT Byron Jerideau
D-lineman missed rookie year to August shoulder injury
    By Michael Gehlken

The Chargers are down to two nose tackles.

On Tuesday, the team waived Byron Jerideau, trimming 334 pounds from a position that already looked light. San Diego is expected to add at least one rookie nose tackle in the next month, as Sean Lissemore and Kwame Geathers are the only ones on the roster.

Jerideau, 24, did not play last season.

He was signed in late April as an undrafted rookie from South Carolina. At best, he was a candidate for the practice squad before suffering an August shoulder injury that required September surgery.

Geathers, also an undrafted rookie in 2013, worked ahead of Jerideau in training camp. He remained on the roster in the season and finished with 39 defensive snaps.

Lissemore and Cam Thomas handled the brunt of work at the position. Last month, the Chargers allowed the latter to walk in free agency. Thomas signed a two-year, $5 million deal with the Steelers.

I'm guessing we're completely eliminating the 2-gap system at NT or Jerideau was released because of his injury.

So, they waved good-bye to Jerideau... Maybe the Bolts front office will try to pick up a NT in the upcoming draft... Or maybe not.

    Haha

But it has to be either or at this point. Either there concerned with the injury/has had a set back or there moving away from the 2-gap type NT's.
