Linebacker Matt Wilhelm, a fourth-round draft choice of the Chargers in 2003, was released Friday.

“We appreciate Matt’s effort and hard work over the past six years,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “We like our depth at inside linebacker, so we decided to make this move now to allow Matt a chance to land with another team.”

Wilhelm was a reserve and key special teams player for the first four years of his career before he became a starter in 2007. In 2008, Wilhelm split time with Tim Dobbins.

The Chargers recently signed Kevin Burnett, a veteran free agent formerly with the Dallas Cowboys, to compete at the position. Dobbins and Burnett are the leading candidates to start alongside fellow inside linebacker Stephen Cooper.

Rookies and select veterans will be on the field Monday morning for the first training camp practice. The entire squad will be on the field together for the first time on Friday, July 31.

Figured he wouldn't b released until training camp. Wonder why they did it now - maybe they just really like who they have

Releasing him now allows other teams to get a look at him in camp. He has a much better chance of landing somewhere by being available now than he does if they kept him through camp. It was actually a a fair way to play it for Wilhelm.

Hey Enormo, I had no idea you had such a mig nick for Wilhelm. He had a bad year to be sure.

Wow - nice of them to let him go now so he can find another team more easily - plus comforting that they have enough confidence in burnett and timmy that letting matt go before TC was possible...

My money is on Dallas or Denver - two systems he should fit into easily. I was kinda hoping to see him turn it around this year but, too little too late. Best of luck to Matt and his family.

So, which one of the Chargers East squads pick him up? Dolphins, Saints, or Patriots?

Wilhelm started out good and I thought he could get it back but our roster is full of LBs now. I think he'd be a good fit in Miami.

We need another LB. We had 13, which is the nubmer we carried last season between the roster and practice squad. AJ better find us a FA, just for depth.

That's kinda what I am thinking. Even though I always thought he sucked balls I would have liked to see him try and make the team this year (he never walked the walk). I did think he 'd be let go before the season started anyway. I guess this is San Diego being nice to their own again. That's a positive, but getting rid of this waster is no loss to the Chargers.

The only good thing I remember Wilhelm did was when he deflected a ball from Vince Young in a regular season game 2 years ago when we went down there and that stupid Lendale Over "Weight" mocked both LT and Merriman in 1 stupid TD dance. (I won't forget that fatboy....) Other than that, that's about it......

Yeah. That was the game saving play that gave our offense a chance to get back in and win it!!!

When he first came here, I saw alot of potential but he didn't reach it.

I'm really surprised by this. Thought he'd have a shot to at least prove himself in camp.

How about the Chefs? They are switching to a 3-4 as well, right?

V true. Or a Chief or a Bronco. He sucks as a football player, but rumour has it he was a bit of a looker?. Maybe Rexy or Syd can confirm this!?.

I am sure all the women like him, I dont have a problem with that at all. Eye candy is great, and the women look just as much as the men.

But as far as his football skills, we just got better by subtraction.

There will be other "Guys" in a Bolts uniform that the women can "enjoy" just as much as we "enjoy" the cheerleaders.

Its what makes going to the game, that much better.
