McClain was set to count over $3 million against the cap in the final year of his contract. The Bolts save $2.5 million with the move. In coach Mike McCoy's first year running the offense, McClain, 29, saw his snaps reduced significantly. It was an easy call for GM Tom Telesco. Due to his still relatively young age and just one career game missed, McClain is now the top free agent lead blocker. He can also handle the rock. It's a position that isn't used much anymore.

Played in 12% of plays RT @UTgehlken: Chargers have released fullback Le'Ron McClain, per source. Move clears $2.5 million in cap space.

Hope the Bolts are going to reinvest this cap space they're clearing, and it's not for the Spanos family reunion in Tahiti.

The thing is, there's probably an equally effective UDFA FB that we could pick up in this year's draft. McClain didn't do much to justify the cap room that he occupied, so why not get a younger and cheaper option.

The cap they cleared today is going to be just about enough to sign the upcoming draft class. So unless Clary is cut don't expect much FA hunting in March.

fullback is basically a useless position in this offense i wouldnt be surprised if a fb doesn't make the 53 this year. we could just use john phillips in mcclains role if need be.

What a waste of a roster spot he was. He was neither a FB or a RB. Not sure what the purpose was at all. Hester is a better FB for chrissakes.

Might the Bolts be leaning towards a H-back type situation instead of running a FB on the field 12% of the time, more bang for the buck right???

Either that or the Mike Tolbert type of fullback, who is basically an extra RB.

A Tolbert type RB would be great until he want's starter money then again RB's seem to be loosing some of the luster they once had.
