I'm excited about this....the biggest weaknesses on our team defense the past 3 years have been our so-so or bad run defense and piss poor tackling. The Cowboys are a very good running team with 3 solid NFL starting caliber backs and a huge OLine. Our D Line is much more stout in the early going....what was it....2.4 YPC this week?..and all three layers of the defense are swarming to the ball and laying hits. Early in the game, I noticed Cason barreling around the edge into a running back behind the line and I was thinking about what a refreshing change that was from Cromartie....who, BTW, continued with the pathetic attempts at tackling on running plays in the Jets game.

I feel like we finally have a group that has completely bought into Ron Rivera's scheme. It takes a team effort. Not a group of individuals.

I'm just so happy we didn't waste our first round pick on Jared Odrick or Dan Price. Our D-line had the talent all along to be good, it was just a matter of staying healthy...and nabbing Cam Thomas in the 5th sure didn't hurt.

I'm not about to start chanting "You can't run!" again until I see them in action in a real game. Though I do like what I see especially out of hte backups like Thomas/Johnson/Martin

When the games start counting then I form an opinion. Exhibition games don't prove much in the terms of how a season will go.

Very true, but I am pleased to see that they aren't stinking up the joint in pre-season. I am encouraged by what I have seen so far...Questions start getting answered for real on September 13th in Kansas City.

Yeah... they'll still be improved this season.... at least on defense.

I'll relish the fact that I'll be able to likely make some decent money betting the under on a lot of Raider games because their D should keep most teams below the 28 point mark pretty regularly, however their offense is looking like the kind that's going to continue to do well enough between the 20's and but end up settling for far more FG's than they should if their offensive line were what a proper one should be.

The fact that the other night there was little difference in the quality of play between Jared Veldheer (an extremely raw rookie from a division 2 college) and their penciled starter Mario Henderson at LT is negligible.

Still... I'd wager their defense will be a nice sleeper pick for a lot of fantasy footballers. They'll be running a very aggressive unit, so that should accrue the viable fantasy-scoring stats by virtue of little more than a large amount of attempts (similar to the manner in which Philadelphia's defense produces even though they aren't all that stellar at consistently not giving up a lot of points).

    Horse ****.

The rotation so far looks good, but I'll stay in the "it's only pre-season" camp with some others here.

chanting this anytime this year will be the equivalent of a Stephen Cooper celebration dance after a two yard gain on second down.

    just stupid.

if we stuff the run for a year or two then start the chant, but not until then.

Absolutely, but preseason also gives you a good indication about how the team might play in the season.

In years past, the defense has played bad in preseason and it was all blamed on "vanilla" play calling only for the defense to follow suit in the regular season.

It's good to see them fired up and playing aggressive defense from the start. Gives me hope that the defense might be good again.

The score might not mean anything to me, but the effort does.

Yeah..The "you can't run" thing has been a joke since we haven't been able to consistently stone the run since about 2006....and the last two years have been more "we can't run" than anything else.

regarding the Raiders...yes, pre-season has become like the playoffs for those fans. The Raiders have looked spectacular in pre-season for 6 straight years.

regarding this thread....Just meant for a little positivity...Our mediocre run defense and tackling over the last few years has been fully transparent during the pre-season also...It's good to see a lot of positives at the line of scrimmage and not getting pushed around when the 1's are in over the past couple of games. Of course it's "only pre-season"....but it doesn't mean we can't talk about positives just like we do with young players who look like they're doing well.

regarding Jamal Williams....He wasn't on the field last year. He wasn't even close to a force of nature two years ago either. This year's rotation will not replace Jamal in his prime....but will be an upgrade over what we've had the past couple of years.

LOL. I was just kidding about Jamal.

I hold judgement on everything when it comes to preseason.
A prime example as to why people should not put a lot of stock in what they see in preseason is to look at the Colts. They have only won four preseason games since 2005. That's a far cry from how they are in regular and post season.

To be fair, while I still agree that judgment should be held until the games really matter, i also think you can still put some amount of stock into individual player performance in the preseason games, which is different from pointing at the overall outcome of the game.

The Chargers were 4-0 in the preseason the year they went 1-15.

yes it's only preseason, but last year they got steamrolled in preseason and it carried into the season, this year they look way better, I'm cautiously optimistic
