The last four weeks, the Chargers prepared for games in which they knew their opponent would try to spread them out and throw the football early and often. As the Bolts prepare to face the Oakland Raiders Sunday, that may not be the case this week.

“Other teams we’ve faced like the Broncos, they generally run the ball but they shied away from it against us,” defensive end Luis Castillo said. “When you look at the Raiders, that’s what they do and that’s what they’re going to do. They’re going to pound the football. We look forward to the challenge.”

The Raiders enter Sunday’s game averaging 194 yards per game on the ground, tops in the NFL. In their last three games, Oakland has rushed for 299, 186 and 200 yards respectively.

“They’re doing a good job of playing physical football,” linebacker Stephen Cooper said. “They’re being efficient. LaMont Jordan and Justin Fargas are both good backs and they’re getting Dominic Rhodes back this week. We believe our style is to be physical, too. We approach every game with that mentality and we’ll need to play that way Sunday.”

Oakland’s success on the ground comes in stark contrast to a year ago when they ranked 29th in the NFL in rushing offense. In addition to hiring offensive line coach Tom Cable, who installed a zone blocking scheme similar to Denver’s, the Raiders made personnel changes.

Barry Sims is back at left tackle. Robert Gallery has settled in at left guard after moving around and playing both tackle spots early in his career. Oakland rebuilt the right side of the line by signing veteran center Jeremy Newberry, right guard Cooper Carlisle and right tackle Cornell Green in free agency. They also added fullback Justin Griffith and drafted tight end Zach Miller.

“It starts up front,” Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner said. “Those guys are doing a real nice job. Their running backs are doing a great job and they’re very committed to the run. They’re mixing in the play action pass and it’s a good balance.”

While most teams have tried to spread the Chargers out, they have had success shutting down opponents’ ground game when faced with the challenge. The Bolts rank 10th in the NFL against the run, giving up 92.8 yards per game.

“We talk about it every day,” Castillo said. “With us it starts with stopping the run. As fun as it is pass rushing and getting after the quarterback, there’s nothing like a one-on-one battle, man against man just out leverage, out physical, out balance the man in front of you. That’s my favorite thing to do. We know if we can win those match ups, more often than not we’re going to be successful.”

Defensive end Igor Olshansky stressed the importance of not only stopping the run but doing so early in the game.

“When an offense is able to run the ball, it creates momentum,” Olshansky said. “In order for us to maintain the momentum of the game, we have to make sure we get the run shut down from the start. We’ve got to set the tone for how it’s going to go.”

Our run defense is definitely up to the challenge. The Turd's running numbers are bloated because they have faced bad run defenses.

Should be some good running by both clubs, and two effective passers. Some key ingredients for a great game.

This could be the game of the week by accident. The Duds are playing better and we've seem to have snap out of our funk. The biggest thing in our favor it, the Duds players have to have the seven straight losses looming in the back of their minds. Thats something thats hard to shake and I don't think they'll get it done this weekend. :bolt:  :abq2:

The Raiduhs will have to depend on Daunte's arm. Teddy Bear better turn our front seven loose. I'm tired of him acting like a Tom Bass clone.
