    Chargers won't pursue Tomlinson, Osgood
    Written by
    Michael Gehlken

The Chargers take a variety of factors into account when building a roster.

Nostalgia is not one of them.

General manager A.J. Smith tossed cold water Monday on any speculation the team might bring back a pair of Pro Bowlers from yesteryear, saying the Chargers will not pursue LaDainian Tomlinson or Kassim Osgood in free agency.

In their heyday, arguably no one in the league was better at their respective craft.

Tomlinson, 32, was the NFL's top all-purpose running back, averaging 122.5 yards per scrimmage with at least 51 catches in each of his first eight seasons. His nine-year Chargers career is considered one of the greatest in franchise history.

After two years with the Jets spent largely as a passing-down specialist, Tomlinson has said he's open to returning to San Diego. And his old team needs a backup behind Ryan Mathews.

    Will the sides reunite?

“No. We have moved on years ago,” Smith said. “We wish him the very best in his search for the team he feels is the best fit for him. We are looking at four backs right now but we may slow down that search a little bit. I know (Jets coach) Rex Ryan has said some great things about LT the last couple years. I would think he would bring him back."

Osgood recorded 95 special teams tackles for the Chargers from 2003 to 2009, fourth-most in the NFL over that span. He went to the Pro Bowl three times.

He then left San Diego searching for a larger offensive role, joining the Jaguars for less money than the Chargers offered.

Osgood, 32, was targeted on 22 passes during two seasons in Jacksonville.

On Monday, Tolbert, the Chargers' co-leader in special teams tackles last season, agreed to a four-year contract with the Panthers.

Has the door opened for Osgood's return?

"No," Smith said. "We have moved on and we feel very comfortable with the special teams guys we have now. As always, we have our eyes on some other guys that we may consider that can help us win. Kassim wants to be a receiver and that just is not going to happen with us."

Well we're not the Chargers without a useless 5th receiver.:D

But seriously the man did his job as a gunner.

Did, as in past tense....... at his age, he's not getting any faster. He also still wants to be a WR. The guy should've realized there's no shame in being an elite special teams player.

Bringing LT back just seems completely counter-intuitive to helping Mathews progress. I know there are some that will argue that Ryan could learn nuances of the trade from arguably one of the Top 3 backs ever to play the game (Brown, Sanders, Tomlinson; it's really kind of a hodge-podge for spots 2-4 between LT, Sanders, and Emmitt Smith), but you have to consider that LT was Mathews' idol. Having a guy's idol playing second fiddle to him in the twilight of his career sounds nice, but it ends ugly far more times than it does the other way around.

Kassim... yeah, if he didn't have utter stone-hands I could see it, but you have to be able to offer some sort of versatility in today's NFL. Our coaching staff, and Bisaccia specifically, seems to prefer LB's and DB's as his ST'ers because at worst they typically find a niche as sub-package players too, or are at a position where the amount of players we consistently put on the field necessitates carrying a few more at that position (very rarely are you going to see a team trot out more than 5 WR's on the gameday roster, unless one of those WR's is also your return specialist.

I understand, but I think it would help Mathews and really motivate the guy.. that 30/30 special was something on Mathews and how he didn't take LT's number because its his. Such great respect and loyalty to the man I thought it would be right to bring LT back.

AJ sounds like he just got out of another divorce. "We moved on years ago" Piece of **** scumbag..

but I agree with the special teams too, Andrew Gahckar looks to be a real nice special teams player as a linebacker.

This poor bastage of a new beat writer must really be struggling for story's, is he !!!!

Why the fark would these two names be even bought up ?.............. why not throw DFlop or maybe Igor or even Merriman and Whiffy into the conversation as well ? ............they all helped us win it all as well didn't they ?................well, close enough I mean !!!

Why the hell do many Chargers fans feel it sooooooooo necessary to live in the past and dwell on dreams that never even happened back then ?

Move on people its 2012 if you hadn't noticed. :whistling:

I can't believe for a minute Osgood still thinks he can be a receiver in the league. Acee tells me he was targeted 22 times in 2 years. I only remember him catching that ball for a TD in his first game, after that SFA. I'm sure the guy would be more than happy to come home and kick *** on STs again. It's not like he is going to be spoilt for choice out there. Pity AJ is so cold as steel.

We got rid of the guy 2 years ago because he wasn't worth a Mill. to be simply a ST'er and have NO other role on the roster.................why the hell would we bring him back now, when he has only aged and got worse ?

So perhaps it's time to start inciting some sort of cat riot, Conc. (So many inappropriate statements I could follow that up with, but I'll resist the urge lest Syd smack me with teh ban-hammer...)

How about this... since folks are so hug up for nostalgia of the 1 and done days, how about we offer a king's ransom to Buffalo to get D-Flo's personal fouling butt back here so that he can headbutt Peyton until Manning's neck goes bad again?

Maybe we can bring in Tim Tebow, we could use a holy icon on the team, that's more important than a 3rd QB

Many fans don't rate that kind of player at all though. Indeed playing on special teams often gets a player that insult of merely being a 'backup', the assumption being that good important players aren't used on them.

One and done is better than no playoffs and done. But then the acceptance of mediocrity here after last season ended would suggest people are ok with the latter.

You know, if the Chargers were run anything like the Padres both of these guys would be welcomed back with open arms. The Pads bend over backwards to bring former San Diego talent... usually former high school stars back to town to try and rejuvenate their careers... Adrian Gonzalez, Adam Harang, Matt Bush (ok- bad example),Brain Giles, etc...

That being said, I'm glad the Chargers don't take this approach.

PS But we did bring back Whitey!!!
