You have to love how losing Burnett and Sproles, while adding LaBoy and Spikes is considered a wash by the NFL. :roflmao:

    I'm confused as to how Spikes + LaBoy + 7th = Sproles + Burnett

You're not the only one. ;)

Compensatory draft picks are issued for teams who lost more or better compensatory free agents than the ones they acquired in the previous year.

In 2011, the Chargers lost running back Darren Sproles and inside linebacker Kevin Burnett. They gained linebackers Takeo Spikes and Travis LaBoy.

To determine the net value, the league uses a formula determined by the NFL Management Council, measuring salary, playing time and postseason accolades. San Diego actually net a positive value, according to the formula, but it was one of three teams to receive an extra selection despite so.

Even the Bills got screwed with the compensatory picks. Lost two pro-bowlers and only added Tyler Thigpen and Brad Taylor

I'm guessing the formula they use factors in a players complete body of work. The veterans we lost had less overall experience/playing time/useable stats. The players we replaced them with had more of the mentioned. I don't know, I'm just guessing here.

I think the formula probably factors in whether you are one of the NFL's darlings or not. Seems like we never get the love some others get.

It's pretty simple actually. You lose two guys and gain two guys, the only thing you can get is a net value compensatory in the late 7th.

If we'd lost one more guy, we'd have had a sweet compensatory pick as well as the net value 7th rounder. Shouldn't have tagged VJ ;)

It's also based on the contracts signed and performance indicators (I believe games played/started with emphasis on the playoffs among other things).

    Exactly. It's a 3 step process.
Step 1: Who gets the compensatory picks? There are 32 and they all must be handed out.
-------1A: Give them to teams that lost more eligible FAs than they gained. If a team loses 4 and picks up 2, they get 2 picks. A team can have a maximum of 4 compensatory picks if eligible.
-------1B: If 1A doesn't result in all 32 picks getting handed out, go to net value formula. Teams that lose equal number of FAs gained and lost will get a pick in late 7th if net value of those lost is substantially greater than FAs gained (eg Chargers this year).
-------1C: If after 1B there still aren't 32 picks handed out, just give them in order of first round of draft (before any trades ie Colts, Rams, etc this year). Brings up another point: compensatory picks cannot be traded.

Step 2: Once you figure out the 32 slots awarded to teams, in what rounds are those 32 picks awarded? Primary criterion for this step is contract $$/yr of the FA that got you the compensatory pick. Example: Drew Brees got paid $$$ and got us a 3rd rounder.

Step 3: Allot order within draft round. This is where playing time/stats of the comp pick comes in along with $$.

It's ****** up. But that's how it works.
