Chargers set to release Luis Castillo again

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 19, 2012, 3:30 PM EDT
    AP
For the second time this offseason, the Chargers are releasing defensive end Luis Castillo.
Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego tweeted out the news a few moments ago.
The Chargers let Castillo go in March for financial reasons, since he was supposed to make $3.9 million with a $1 million roster bonus. But they re-signed the former first-round pick in April for one year, with a minimum base salary of $825,000.
The Chargers are solid at the position, with Corey Liuget, rookie Kendall Reyes,Vaughn Martin and Jacques Cesaire providing plenty of depth.
Castillo only played one game last year before breaking his leg. Despite that, he visited Kansas City and New England during his month of unemployment, indicating there may be a market for him now.

Kind of surprising they would outright release him this early, thought they'd at least let him take a shot at securing a roster spot. Oh well, good guy but couldn't perform. GL Castillo

If they're releasing him now, it's because they don't think he's competitive enough with younger prospects. He hit the limit of his abilities in 2006/7 and has never been back since. Reyes, Liuget, and Martin basically make him an expendable asset. It could also mean that Tommie Harris is coming back to football.

Thinking that releasing him now is part confidence in the other DL players and part favor to Luis so he can go hook up with another team where he has a better shot at a staring role.

Drafting Reyes made Castillo more expendable, but I'm still a little surprised that they didn't keep him for at least a portion of camp, just in case. As Syd said, probably as much to let him find a better fit as anything.

As posted above me, The UT is reporting he has back issues.
Speaking of the UT...I am from out of town...the last few days I havent been able to read any sports articles...as it wants me to subscribe. Ugh..how lame.....when did they start this and is there a way around it?

Castillo just never panned out and became a dominant player, hell he was only slightly above average.

Wow, a contradiction in an incomplete sentence is...teabaggerish (new word).
The new owner, Doug Manchester, is a conservative. Yes, that makes
him a kochsucker, but a libertard?
I know you're new here, so, just want to inform you that there is a
forum on this site that deals with political opinion.

I met Castillo, there's no doubt he's a nice smart guy and I believe it was for this reason the likes of Acee and AJ backed/paid him like they would no other player. He just didn't live up to the billing. I wish him good luck, no matter what I'm sure he has a very bright future whatever he turns his hand to.

If he isn't playing for a team you support, what the hell do you care? The man has a right to earn a living any legal way that he can.

Where did I say I cared what he did? The post I replied to stated that he had a very bright future at whatever he turned his hand to. I voiced my agreement, so long as he doesn't turn his hand to playing pro football, i.e., he has a bright future in anything other than the pro game.

Yeah, that is what surprised me. I figured he would at least compete with Cesaire for one of the backup jobs

Children resort to name-calling. I asked a question and you explained it
    by calling me names?

If you want to discuss politics go to the political forum, further name calling and other such political BS will lead to infractions. Cut that **** out!

I wonder if Castillo is out of shape too, everyone I know who's seen him off the field said he looks like a blimp. Still, the man is good for some camp reps.

I hope this only means Pagano is excited about a younger player like Logan Harrell or Eddie Brown.

whoa! I didn't do any of this but even if I did, you better not bring my kids into again or it will lead to infractions. Understand?
