    Chargers land safety Lott

    Monday, April 17, 2006
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Chargers have signed safety Andre Lott to a two-year contract.

“Andre has four years of valuable experience on the NFL level,” said Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith. “He’s healthy now and looking for a second chance. He gives us another veteran to compete in the secondary. I’m excited to see what he can do.”

Lott originally entered the NFL in 2002 as a fifth-round draft choice (159th overall) of the Washington Redskins. He played in all 16 games as a rookie and was fifth on the team with 13 special teams tackles. In 2003, Lott played in 11 games and had six stops on the specialty units. In 2004, Lott cracked the ’Skins starting lineup for three games, but suffered a season-ending pectoral injury against Green Bay on Oct. 31. He was placed on the “Reserve-Injured” list the following day. Last season, Lott suffered a knee injury during an offseason practice. He reached an injury settlement with Washington and was released before the season.

Lott has played in 31 career games and started three. His career totals include 28 tackles and one sack on defense and 19 tackles on special teams.

Lott was born May 31, 1979 and prepped at Melrose High School in Memphis before attending the University of Tennessee. He was a two-time All-SEC choice for the Volunteers, earning first-team honors in 2001 and second-team accolades in 2000.

They are not sitting still and you have Buddy Nix on the prowl.
The same shrugs were done with Gates at one time so you never know. The good sign is we are not standing pat and are turning over the rocks in search of talent.

That is my read as well.

Special teams is a bit of an inconsistent thorn in the side.

Steve "Bing" Crosby is the main culprit here. I met Crosby's roommate last year. He is an ex-Giants player named Jim Steinke - safety. Dude owns the Toyota dealership in San Marcos Texas (outside San Antonio). Jim has a room at the Toyota dealership dedicated to the NFL. All the walls are adorned with NFL memorabilia.

If anyone is in this area - stop by and say hi and check out his NFL room. Jim took an hour or so to chat and show me his shrine. This dude knew several old Chargers players which was way cool. I could not stop saying "wow" as I looked at the walls of nostalgia.

At any rate, Jim said Crosby's nickname was "Bing" and the coaches in the NFL are a big fraternity for the most part.
