    Chargers sign Donald Strickland
Posted by Mike Florio on March 12, 2010 5:17 PM ET
A league source has confirmed that the Chargers have signed cornerback Donald Strickland to a two-year deal.

The contract was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Strickland spent 2009 with the Jets, after spending time with the Colts, Eagles, and 49ers.

A spot for the former Jet came upon once the Chargers traded Antonio Cromartie to the Jets.

Can't say I know anything about him, which is common for an AJ FA signing...

Hope he can serve as a good backup and push our starters a little.

Didn't he also play a small part as a college professor in 'Animal House' with John Belushi?

I recall seeing him play with the 49ers. Hopefully he turns out to be decent.

He's barely played the past couple of years, but that can mean less miles. This guy was a hitter when he first came in, then had some injuries. It's a cheap way to send a message to the defensive backfield of this team that is going to have to start playing more physical at the line, and in open space.

You have a point, but as an old mafioso once told me, "If you want to send a message to someone, send them the scariest messenger."

    From ESPN

2009 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
    Grade: 56 | Key

Comment: Strickland is a backup corner who usually covers the slot when the nickel and dime personnel are on the field. He has adequate size, speed and quickness. He is more effective playing off coverage than in bump-and-run or man coverage. He has good foot quickness to pedal and gain depth. He shows adequate route awareness, but lacks the top burst to flip or drive quickly to make up ground. He will get caught looking into the backfield and lose leverage on routes. He can look a little tight through the hips and will have trouble changing direction quickly. He gives good effort in run support and is willing to throw his body around to make plays. He also gives good effort in the kicking game.

I've also heard he's been mostly a special teams player. Maybe you should consider this as a possible replacement to Osgood and depth at 4th CB then anyone to replace Cro

If we got him at the Vet minimum then maybe it is worth it.

There now everyone can get off AJ's sack. He brought in a free agent!

Good hitter, injury prone though. Could be a solid 4th CB if healthy, nothing more than depth really.

this is a good signing....this guys only problem is that he has trouble staying healthy...I think he has a good chance to be our nickel corner next year....better coverage than gregory who is a safety....and a very solid tackler for a CB. Will plug in nicely into our D.

I don't know anything about the guy so I'm not going to say he's any good (or bad) I'm merely going to point out that there is a lot more to the cornerback position than just INTs.

You are correct. Also staying healthy plays a big part into it. He has not been productive in his first 8 seasons so what makes AJ think that he will start being productive now? :icon_shrug:

Strickland played opposite Revis last year and looked solid doing it. I see more Jets games than you guys do, but trust me, this is not a bad signing at all.

Looks like he has had a Terrance Shaw/Elvis Patterson type of career so far. :tounge:

Wasn't Lito Sheppard the #2 guy behind Revis last year?

This. I'll tell you this much, he's a smart, heady player who is a solid tackler and blitzer. We're not looking for a starting CB obviously...and this guy, when healthy can do the job at nickel or reserve CB just fine.

If you read through the Jets message boards, their only complaint about the guy is that he has trouble staying heatlhy consistently...but they like him as a player.

Lito started the season opposite, was injured, and Strickland took over and did a great job. Lito came off the injury report, was inserted back in the lineup for one game, and Strickland re-claimed the starting role the next.

As I said, I do not want to watch Jets games, but in CT, it is all we have on Sundays besides Pats games.

That was pretty much the same thing that was said about Burnett by Cowboy fans. Unfortunately, he continued that streak by battling injury for us again all year last year.

Fair enough, but you didn't mention any of this in the post I responded to. You just said "2 INTs, he sucks" (paraphrasing, of course)
