Former University of Western Ontario defensive lineman Vaughn Martin has signed a four-year contract with the San Diego Chargers, the team that drafted him with the 13th pick of the fourth round back in April’s NFL Draft.

The London, Ont. native was the first Canadian university underclassman ever to declare eligible for the NFL Draft, having played just two seasons at Western before leaving school.

The 6-foot-3, 331-pound Martin drew considerable interest from NFL teams for his unique combination of strength and speed which allow him to play either the nose tackle or end position in the Chargers 3-4 defence.

Martin was impressive during San Diego’s off-season workouts in May in June, absorbing a huge learning curve but performing well enough to enter training camp as the back at all three defensive line positions.

Martin’s selection by the Chargers was the second highest for a Canadian university player, behind only former Queen’s University offensive lineman Mike Schad who was a first-round selection of the Los Angeles Rams in 1986.

The Chargers open training camp on July 31 and open their regular season on Monday, Sept. 14th at Oakland.

Martin received a signing bonus of just under a half-million dollars (U.S.) from the Chargers.

TSN Insider Dave Naylor of the Globe and Mail is reporting that Canadian defensive end Vaughn Martin has signed a four-year deal with the San Diego Chargers.

    No financial details released.

The 23-year old was chosen in the fourth round, 113th overall by the Chargers in April's NFL draft.

The University of Western product still has three-years of University eligibility remaining and is not eligible for the CFL Canadian college draft until 2011.

Martin, who was born in Jamaica, did not take up football until 10th grade.

    Excellent.

Lets see what the big Rasta Canuck can do.

If the kid can simply hold his ground next to Jamal we might just get our ability to stop the run back.

read somewhere today, that they expect everyone to be signed by Sunday, except English.

Not that they are expecting a long hold out or anything, but they hadn't started yet.

got big hopes for martin. He's just got to learn how to use his hands so to get off the holds he'll get every play and he should from there do well.

On the nfl.com thing they had warren sapp and then half a year later they had on simeon rice on for a answer and question thing from the fans. I asked both is using your hands and getting off of the o-linemans holds the most important thing for a d-lineman. And they both said "absolutely".

My advice to martin is take karate and judo classes to learn to use your hands well.
