SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Clinton Hart was rewarded for a strong first season as a full-time starter.

The San Diego Chargers on Monday signed the strong safety to a five-year contract extension.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"It's a day that I've been waiting for," Hart said. "I've put in a lot of work. I feel blessed and I'm happy to be part of the Chargers for a few more years so we can make that run at a world championship."

In his fifth season overall and fourth with the Chargers, Hart started all 16 regular-season games and all three playoff games at strong safety in 2007.

"We are very happy to have Clinton as a part of our future," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "He was a first-year starter last year and was a major part of our team's success. We believe his best football is ahead of him."

Hart finished second on the team with five interceptions and third in tackles with 109 for San Diego, which lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game.

An undrafted free agent who did not play in college, Hart played in the Arena Football League before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2003. The Chargers claimed him off waivers in September 2004.
