Caught me by surprise too. And yes Ant, AJ is anticipating problems with Merriman's injury or contract or both. Oh, and, **** Condon.

Hey guys, is it inappropriate for me to think that I don't want two white DB's on the roster?

Great news for my man who has worked his butt off to make the team! Gregory was a total surprise an I had him being gone. Hard work pays off!

Gregory? A commentator at the draft said, "AJ Smith is looking at this guy so you know he's good." Other commentator says, " Yeah AJ Smith looked to be making a questionable call but it's AJ Smith so it must be a good decision."

Gregory's a pretty good special teams player - maybe its also looking ahead to the eventual end of Kassim Osgood's time here

Osgood is a gunner. Floyd has been doing some work at Gunner, but no one comes as close to Osgood in that position. Osgood is a leader on special teams.

Gregory's signing just means that Tribble might not make it and the other UDFAs won't make at safety/CB.

As for special teams Dobbins and Polk have just as much of a chance to be cut as Osgood. They don't contribute as much and both look horrid in preseaon and pedestrian in camp.

The problem with Osgood is he wants more playing time a WR despite the fact that he sucks at that position.

It may be beyond AJ's control if Osgood insists on going elsewhere to try and find a team that's willing to give him more time at WR, because the Chargers aren't going to do that.

I can't remember the full details, but Osgood has a contract for at least this season. So he isn't going anywhere unless a team trades for him. That's unlikely to happen so, unless one of the other guys of more use elsewhere really steps up on ST's, Kassim will continue to be our special team demon throughout the whole of our Superbowl winning season.

Players with contracts get released all the time. Olivea, McCree, Parker, all had a year, two, or more remaining on their contracts when they were released.

    Too true.
Not normally Pro Bowlers, though (if you don't count Brees!).

It may well come down to the numbers crunch and depend on how highly Turner values Osgoods ST play above Floyd or gregory.

Hanik Milligan got released two years and he was a Pro Bowl Special Teamer that sucked as a DB.

Turner has already said how much he values Floyd's abilities going into this season.

Gregory's value was just shown by his nice contract extension.

I don't see Osgood even being mentioned by the coach(es) or by AJ regarding an extension. That is a very telling sign.

Agreed that he won't get an extension and that he'll probably get his wish to try out at WR with another side next year.
But this year I think he stays.

that's because Osgood seriously burned his bridges by making ridiculous demands of GM AJ Smith. And that dove tails back into what I was talking about - they're signing really good special teams player to potentially prepare for Osgood's potential departure/likely departure in 2 yrs

There's really no point when others are now just as good as ST gunners. He'll never be a WR for this team, and his roster spot is more valuable for someone that can actually contribute on offense and defense, even if for just a play or two a game.

And I don't count Brees since he wasn't cut.

I am only seeing highlights of the games just now - that means no ST plays so I'll have to take your word that other gunners are just as good as Osgood - but that's not the feeling I'm getting from some others.
