    Chargers sign two draft picks

    July 1, 2008 9:05 PM

    Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

With just five picks from last April's draft, the Chargers don't have as much work as most teams do when it comes to signing rookies before training camp starts.

Still, San Diego got a jump on locking up draft choices Tuesday by inking its fifth-round choice, running back Marcus Thomas, and its seventh-round choice, tackle Corey Clark. Both players signed four-year deals.

The Chargers have three more draft picks to sign, including first-round pick Antoine Cason, a cornerback from Arizona and third-round pick Jacob Hester, a tailback/fullback from LSU. Also unsigned is cornerback DeJuan Tribble, a sixth-round pick.

The team has had talks with Cason and it wouldn't be a surprise if he were to come to an agreement in the next couple of weeks. Cason is a leading candidate to be San Diego's nickel cornerback.

Three weeks before the start of training camp, the Chargers have taken the first step in getting their draft picks under contract as they signed two of their five choices Tuesday. Running back Marcus Thomas and offensive tackle Corey Clark both signed four-year contracts.

Thomas, a fifth-round pick (166 overall) out of Texas-El Paso, is a big runner with a slashing style who is expected to compete with Darren Sproles and Jacob Hester for playing time behind LaDainian Tomlinson. The Chargers drafted Thomas (6-0, 215) with the 166th overall selection after he rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at UTEP.

Clark was drafted in the seventh round (234 overall) out of Texas A&M. The 6-6, 315-pound Clark was a two-year starter for the Aggies and will most likely battle for a reserve role along the offensive line. Clark spent most of his time during minicamp and offseason coaching sessions working at right tackle.

Chargers rookies are scheduled to report to training camp on July 20 and will be on the field July 21 with select veterans. The first full-squad training camp practice will be held on Friday, July 25.

Over the next three weeks, Bolts officials will dedicate their energy to signing their remaining three draft picks: cornerback Antoine Cason (first round), third-round pick running back Jacob Hester, and sixth-rounder DeJuan Tribble, a cornerback from Boston College.

I am very confident they'll sign em all before TC... no player can afford to get behind... they are so few marginal players...

    Couldn't agree more.

Hester and Cason each have a chance to fill important niches on a championship contending team. No way in hell either one of them wants to miss out on so much as a DOWN o' that action!

Let's get 'em all in the Chargers fold ASAP.

Any problems, just remind them that they'll be among the few rookies to get a championship ring their first year.

IMO, Corey Clark's chances of making the team aren't significantly better than Tyler Luellen's.

As long as somebody steps up, it doesn't really matter who.

I am just hoping for a path like our current starter Clarey, one year on the PS.........then make the team as a backup next year. I like that Norv, Hunter and staff have him at tackle. I don't know if Clarey could handle backup LT in a pinch? Is Oben still with us?

No. He was waived to make room for Dave Rayner on the playoff roster, and hasn't been re-signed.

The Chargers have two advantages. AJ drafts well no matter where the picks are and where we are drafting, all of our picks will be slotted, sooner or later, regardless of their potential.

Nah, he's on 1360AM Sportstalk Radio (in SD) with Chris Ello. I listen to him all the time. Oben is actually a real good sports analyst, articulate and knowledgable and as Chris Rock would say, "He's so well spoken!"
