NOTEBOOK: Inside LB a position in flux for Bolts
    Written by
    Kevin Acee

It wasn’t the big name fans crave, but the signing of Kevin Bentley yesterday could have significant implications on the makeup of the inside linebacker position for the Chargers, specifically the future of Stephen Cooper.

“Obviously, the circumstance we have there, it’s not set,” Norv Turner said. “We’re going to find out where Coop is with his arm and we’re going to find out where these young guys … (Bentley) is a guy that’s experienced and we’re going to give him a chance in these next two-and-half weeks to show us what he can do.”

Cooper returned to practice on Wednesday, three days after suffering a torn biceps muscle. The eight-year veteran declined the suggested surgery that would sideline him two to three months and is expected to test his heavily-wrapped right arm.

Cooper was signed Aug. 12 with the idea that if he could remain healthy and play well enough he would provide depth and leadership at a position rife with young players.

The signing of Bentley, a nine-year veteran who was the Houston Texans’ special teams captain the past two seasons, signals that the Chargers are continuing to look for veteran depth at the position.

Wow, never heard of this guy, but he's been in the league since 2002. Let's hope he doesn't have too play much. He was the Texans special teams captain, so maybe he can help out there. Just heard that Siler tore his Achilles at the Chiefs' camp. Sucks for him.

Mmmmm me and ThunderHorse have the same sig.

As for Bentley I can't imagine he has done much as a starting ILB in the league even if he has been around for ages. The name rang no bells whatsoever for me (and many others it would appear). Echoing boltssbbound above, how bad is that for Siler?, awful news. What is up with Coop playing He-Man?. I can't see him making it now.

I basically see him as a backup/4th ILB (behind Mouton) who can also be a special teams dynamo. He will likely fill the Siler/Applewhite role

Siler and Applewhite started quite a bit last year..

I don't know, all that's left that has any value is Tatupu and Dhani Jones.. (whoever told me Lofa signed with the 'skins was wrong, hes still available). Both are getting old and Tatupu's body seems to be toast.. Not a whole lotta options at this point.

I don't know why everyone's so high on Kirk Morrison. If he were so good it wouldn't have taken him this long....to land with the Buffalo Bills.

Sure I'd like to have him on the squad, he seemed pretty good when he was with the Raiders, but it's not like we missed on Ray Lewis or something.

I think some ppl need to chill on the fret about ILB depth. We havent even gotten to the 53 man cutdown date. The vet will be there if we end up actualy needing one. This route also gives our young/new guys a chance to build on what they have done so far.

I'm guilty of this... but I think b/c he's an SDSU alumni he gets some extra love from the San Diego fanbase. Plus, the ILB market is slimslimslim pickings so of the leftovers he was one of the more appealing options.
