Chargers tag RB Sproles as franchise player

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Antonio Bryant, Darren Sproles, San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Chargers took a major step to resolve their running back issues. They designated Darren Sproles as their franchise player, which will limit his free-agent options but guarantee him $6.621 million for the 2009 season.

Most believed the Chargers couldn’t afford to pay both Sproles and starting RB LaDainian Tomlinson. But the Chargers made sure they could.

Also, the Buccaneers officially tagged WR Antonio Bryant as their franchise player.

Good move, or too much for a kick returner?

I'm really happy about this... nervous for the LT situation to be resolved but still happy.

Darren is a gem, he's way more than just a kick returner and he showed us why last season.

I'm glad Sproles will be back next season but they are paying him too much.

Great move on AJ's part...sign Sproles to a long term deal and renegotiate with LT and draft Knowshon Moreno or LeSean McCoy.:abq2:

10% of 123 Million to two running backs? That is if LT can get his numbers in and around the 5.8 area...

When you looks at it like this, it's not too much to pay to one of the biggest return threats in the game, a huge 3rd down back and LT (which when healthly, needs to further explanation)...

Good Move AJ! You have my approval.

How is LT going to accept Sproles getting his pay and him taking a pay cut?

It's called being a team player and knowing that your 9 yrs. into a career and if you want to win you need a guy with younger legs and a total game breaker. Also, if the Sproles does a deal with AJ it won't be for 6.621, maybe some guaranteed money up front and a long term deal. Sproles wants to play with the Chargers. Hes testing the market to get the max cash which inturn will pressure LT to renegotiate if he really wants to stay in San Diego. See when i see this situation i see good things where it seems others see tragedy. BTW i love LT, but i love the Chargers first. One player is not the team and i think we will keep both in the end.

When he was hurt, why didnt he take him self out?

When he was hurt, why did he sit on the sidelines and pout?

maybe but I think this is going to be a big blow to his ego and his pride that his backup is making this money and AJ is asking for a cut in his salary. Personally I think this is a sign that LT might be going

well, maybe we don't need a 2000 yard running back.

Look at the SB winners over the last 10 years.

    not one rb mvp.

Because it makes the WHOLE TEAM better, and we're shooting for a Championship.

Plus - for like the millionth time sorry - LT doesn't necessarily have to take a "pay cut" to restructure and help lessen the cap hit. Peyton Manning restructures his deal like every single off season to help the Colts get the pieces they feel they need to be competitive. If the deal is reasonable, it makes sense to me that LT would do something similar.

I cannot wait until 2/26 so we can have some actual facts to work with...

Questions & perceptions, my friend. If we heard others on the team complaining about LT, then you'd have a point.

    OR...

This gives the Chargers the upper hand in bargaining with Sproles tagged.

I asked this on another board: How much of a cut will LT have to take? If he's set to make $8.8 million, will he get $6.6 million?

I really don't know how the contract/money thing works in the NFL. Can the Chargers give him more money up front and not take the cap hit?

Here is my prediction on salary numbers for Sproles potential long term contract:

2009: $4.5 mil signing bonus + 2 mil base salary
2010: $2.5 mil base salary (Guaranteed)
    2011: $3 mil base pay
    2012: $3.5 mil base pay

This would give him his full $6.5 this year just like he is supposed to get with the franchise tag. Plus it gives him an additional $2.5 mil guaranteed which he didn't already have as next years base pay.

This give him a cap number of just under $4mil for each of the next 4 years.

Well with the Jaguars cutting Taylor who was supposed to make 6+mil and Deuce Mcallister being cut by the Saints at 7+ mil. I would think LT would see a trend. I doubt either of them end up on a good team next season. LT will take a cut, his ego will tell him he will look like a hero with something to prove next season or he will stick to his guns and will be gone. Either way AJ had to do this, was he just going to let Sproles walk? AJ knows what hes doing.
