Bolts to start with offensive line
    Written by
    Michael Gehlken

    It’s all lined up now.

Piece by piece, the Chargers have built their plan for free agency, where the moves made first will affect those second like an elaborate track of dominoes.

The first to fall will be the offensive line.

The Chargers have begun contract negotiations with center Nick Hardwick and left tackle Jared Gaither, set to become unrestricted free agents if not re-signed by March 13 when the new league year starts. How talks progress could dictate how competitively the team can bid for other top free agents — such as wide receiver Vincent Jackson — on the open market.

All along, General Manager A.J. Smith has publicly tabbed solidifying the left side of the offensive line his top offseason priority. If done early, the Chargers can enter the Jackson Sweepstakes with known financial footing, not to mention piece of mind.

Hardwick and Gaither are free to negotiate and re-sign with the Chargers before March 13 at 1 p.m. PT, which is when outside teams enter the fold.

The Chargers claimed Gaither, 25, off waivers late last season to replace sixth-year starter Marcus McNeill, who suffered a season-ending neck injury Nov. 10 against the Raiders. Gaither allowed neither a sack nor quarterback hit in five starts, ceding just three pressures on 179 pass plays.

McNeill has a history of spinal issues. He is not expected to pass the team’s medical evaluation and will likely be released by March 15.

The free agency class at left tackle is not especially strong after Gaither. Top candidates include the Bills’ Demetrius Bell, Lions’ Jeff Backus and Bengals’ Anthony Collins.

Hardwick, the most experienced veteran on the Chargers line, entered the league in 2004 with quarterback Philip Rivers. Last season, he saw the third-most offensive snaps on the team in arguably the best year of his career.

The veteran class at center offers more than tackle, headlined by the Texans’ Chris Myers, Packers' Scott Wells, Patriots’ Dan Koppen and Falcons' Todd McClure.

Best-case scenario: The Chargers’ first dominoes in free agency won’t fall that far.

Just a note: Michael Gehlken is the new U-T Chargers beat writer....... Kevin Acee is now columnist.

Makes sense to get Rivers protection taken care of. No sense in offering VJ a contract if Rivers doesn't have time to throw the ball.

Maybe it's just because it's not Acee, but I actually like the tone in which this new guy writes as opposed to Acee, who lately has really read like he was condescending to the reader and at the very least came off as extremely haughty. And hopefully Gehlken, assuming he even has a wife, can figure out that none of us care about his wife when reading his articles or tweets pertaining to the Chargers.

It's also a case of building/locking-down the right way - from the trenches outward. If Garay had played like he deserved better than low-end starter's money last season, I'd say he'd be next in line along with VJ after Hardwick and Gaither (sorry, but dime a dozen skill position players like Tolbert, Gregory, Oliver, etc come quite secondary to those trench players that we actually want to retain... and should).

I've always agreed with AJ's philosophy of....
    1) Build through the draft.
    2) Start with the line.
    3) Re-sign your own guys first.

The problem is he has sucked at it.

Yep, Ive always found that if your gonna state a philosophy to live by, its probably best if you actually DO IT, rather than talk about it.

It's his typical yearly BS, that's why I didn't bother to post it.

Acee always teases with some big name free agent the Charger could pursue......... but they never do.

It's the whole Lucy with the football story over and over again.

Figured you guys would be happy - the claim is that Acee is nothing more than AJ's press agent. If he has more flexibility now that he's not the beat writer, you might see more 'honesty' from him

Either way its a good initial strategy by the Bolts - VJ is great but as seen from the Raider game etc if Rivers can't stay upright doesn't matter who's running 5/7 second routes

Remember when Acee teased that we could be in the market for Nnamdi Asomugha last year?

This year, we're going after Mario Williams! :roflmao:

To be fair, what Acee said last year regarding Asomugha was "Indications are – and this will shock no one – that the Chargers making a big play to sign Asomugha is a longshot. "

I've never understood why so many here are so down on Acee. Maybe it's because I don't read much of his stuff, but for a beat reporter I thought he did a good job with the Chargers coverage.

My point was simple...... he always writes an article saying the Chargers could go after the biggest name in free agency, when he knows damn well there's a snow ball's chance in hell of that happening.

Why waste column space with that crap? It's only because he knows people will click on an article that has the big name attached...... it's poor journalism. Acee is a "columnist" now, and he doesn't even bother to spell check his stuff.

Fair enough and I see your point. I guess I'm just willing to cut the guy a little more slack. I'm sure it's not easy appeasing the masses during the off-season.

I don't think you'll appease them by teasing them with players the Chargers will never sign...... fair enough?
