HIS SOUTHERN TWANG sounds similar to Brett Favre's. His air of confidence comes off like Tom Brady's. But Philip Rivers has a way to go before he can possibly measure up to what those quarterbacks have done on the field.

Actually starting his first NFL game would be a nice step for Rivers.

He'll finally do that Sept. 11, when the San Diego Chargers play the Raiders in Oakland in a "Monday Night Football" season opener. Rivers, picked fourth overall in the 2004 draft, said he couldn't ask for a better place to make his starting debut.</blockquote>
