SAN DIEGO ---- The Chargers didn't meet Sunday, enjoying Christmas off like most. It's their down time starting next Sunday that is no gift.

The Chargers' nose is squished against the outside window of the NFL playoffs.

Their 20-7 drubbing by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday eliminated the Chargers from playoff contention.

"It's a shame with the type of talent we have,'' veteran linebacker Randall Godfrey said after the game.

What doomed the Chargers (9-6) this year was a slow start and a batch of inconsistency. For every win over the Patriots, was a loss to the Eagles. One can praise the conquest of the Colts, but don't overlook the meltdown versus Miami.

The season offered the good, the bad and the NFL reality to the defending AFC West champions.</blockquote>
