SAN DIEGO – The NFL released its preseason schedule Wednesday, and the Chargers will host two of the league’s most storied franchises in Green Bay and Dallas.

San Diego also will travel to Minnesota before its traditional preseason finale against San Francisco, this year in the Bay Area on Aug. 30.

"From a fan's perspective, you couldn't ask for a better start than to face the Packers and the Cowboys right out of the gate," Head Coach Norv Turner said. "All four preseason opponents will be a great test for our players and coaches in preparation for the 2012 season."

The Chargers host the Packers in a nationally-televised game on ESPN on Aug. 9 at 5 p.m. in the preseason opener for both teams, four months and five days from now.

The game is a rematch of last season’s Week 9 contest at Qualcomm Stadium. San Diego’s comeback fell short in an entertaining game that saw the then-defending Super Bowl Champion Packers win for the 14th consecutive time, 45-38.

San Diego will play Dallas in a preseason game for the fourth time in five years. Last year, the Chargers spent several days participating in joint practices with the Cowboys in Dallas ahead of the teams’ second preseason game in Cowboys Stadium. Head Coach Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator on the Cowboys teams that won Super Bowls XXVI and XXVII.

The Bolts travel to Minnesota in another rematch, this time of last year’s season-opener. The Chargers executed a second-half comeback and won, 24-17, launching a 4-1 start to the season.

As both teams sift through the players competing for final roster spots, the Chargers and 49ers will face each other for the 25th consecutive preseason. The game will mark 10 consecutive preseason finales between the two teams, which have played every preseason but two in the last 41 years (’78, ’86).

The league will announce dates for the Cowboys and Vikings games as well as a kickoff time for the 49ers game at a later time. The NFL has yet to announce when it will release the regular-season schedule, but it’s typically done in April.

Key players, preseason opponents: Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews (Packers), Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware (Cowboys), Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen (Vikings), Alex Smith and Patrick Willis (49ers).

Preseason this year is going to be about the LG/RG depthchart, the WR depthchart at #3,4,5, SS, and OLBer. I think every other position is more or less set, and it's just a question of figuring out where our STers/depth guys are going to be.

Also worth noting, every single one of these opponents has at least 1 elite passrusher.

At least the home preseason games are going to be a good draw for crowds. Problem is, the away team is going to be there in force!

As long as they sellout, fans can watch them locally. It's the preseason........ who cares if the stadium is filled with cheese-heads and cowgirls? ;)
