Team Will Not Commit Past 2010 Season

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers home games will be at Qualcomm Stadium for at least one more season as the team tries to build support for a new venue in downtown San Diego, it was reported Tuesday.

Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani, who has spearheaded the team's stadium search since 2002, announced Monday that the team won't trigger the termination clause in its lease this year. But it also won't commit to staying in San Diego beyond the 2010 season, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Fabiani said the Chargers' focus this year will be on assessing the political support for building an up to $800 million stadium using public subsidy, the newspaper reported.

The Centre City Development Corp. -- San Diego's downtown redevelopment arm -- was expected to meet Wednesday to consider asking the City Council to support initiating the process to use redevelopment revenue for a stadium east of Petco Park, where the San Diego Padres play baseball.

thx. I'm pretty familiar with my home town.

I hope they get moving on this. If a stadium gets built in LA, it's going to open the exit door big time.

    That would make me sad

Hardly. Roski wants ownership in an NFL team. Spanos won't give that up.

The value of a franchise that moves to LA will skyrocket and the Spanos group is obviously looking at it.

However, the NFL does not want to conceed the 7th largest US market. The pressure from the NFL to stay put will be substantial. It is in the best interests of the NFL to have 3 teams in southern California. Hopefully one of them will become a new AFCW rival.

If you are familiar, then why do you make statements like "I thought somewhere along the water", knowing that there isn't ANY land on the water that is available?

It will be the New Stadium that will make the value of the team skyrocket. Regardless of the city.

IMO Jacksonville still seems to be the most likely option for Roski - they have MAJOR attendance issues and are not likely to receive another Super Bowl anytime soon even with a newer facility. Also the Rams, which are for sale and which previously were in socal, are still in play even if the guy who owns the Blues is trying to put a group together, he's been trying for awhile... the NFL wants owners with deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep pockets.

I'm still not convinced putting a team in LA is guaranteed to = success. Both the Rams and Raiders failed and left before, why would it be any different this time?
