Chargers waive 10, Gross on IR

    Casey Pearce, Chargers.com

NFL rosters must be trimmed to 75 players by Tuesday afternoon, and the Chargers approached that number Monday by releasing 10 players and placing running back Tyronne Gross on “Reserve-Injured.” The team has to release one additional player by 1 pm tomorrow.

Those asked to turn in their playbooks Monday morning included cornerback Quinton Jones, safety Miguel Merrick, linebacker Zach Latimer, offensive tackle Mike Jones, guard Jeremy Sheffey, quarterback Brett Elliott, tight end T.J. Cottrell and wide receivers Rhema McKnight, Rich Musinski and Sonny Shackelford. Cottrell, Musinski and Elliott played in NFL Europa this spring. All others waived were undrafted rookie free agents.

Gross was in the midst of an impressive training camp when he suffered a knee injury in the Chargers’ Aug. 18 preseason win at St. Louis. He’ll undergo an operation to repair the knee.

The Chargers close out their preseason slate Thursday night when they host the San Francisco 49ers. Rosters must be reduced to 53 players by Saturday, Sept. 1. On Sunday, teams can form an eight-man practice squad from players who clear waivers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Brownies grab Rhema McKnight so that Brady Quinn will have a really familiar WR to throw to when he starts later this season.

Your boy will either be placed on Injured Reserve or get an injury settlement.

I'm surprised they let Elliot go. Usually the Chargers will keep a QB on the practice squad as the scout team arm.

In a related move, the Patriots claim wide receivers Rhema McKnight, Rich Musinski and Sonny Shackelford.

The Miami Dolphins claim the other seven.

    Gutted for Gross.

Some are no surprise whatsoever eg. Latimer, Musinski, Shackelford. I guess some of these might be candidates for the PS correct?. If so Merrick, Sheffey and Jones could all be prospects from what I have heard/read. Robertson is hanging in there...... even with the bum ankle.

The Turk did not visit Robertson this day. :icon_banana:

I hope Erk Robertson will be one of our Practise Squad personell. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

You really think that McKnight is good enough to not only make a team (having been cut twice already), but good enough to see PT as a WR???

Maybe they'll sit Braylon Edwards for him so that Brady is more comfortable.

most people thought he would be our eventual #3 QB but he's just been atrocious whenever he's been on the field with no improvement.

I wouldn't doubt if the delay is because of negotiating an injury settlement with Robertson. Sorry Chippie.

Elliot was included in the 1st cuts last year as well, and found his way onto the practice squad. I'm going to assume the same will happen this year as long as he clears waivers.

I'm thinking the practise squad is most likely. I don't think the injury is severe enough to get him on IR without risking the consequences of a stashing allegation. He should clear waivers since he is injured at the moment and is probably not on a lot of radar screens.

I have to agree - much as I like that kid's performance during mini-camps/OCAs - he (Robertson) is destined to be "next" on my book. Only decision is injury settlement or I/R.

My guess is none of these guys are on the practice squad. If they were gonna make the squad they'd still be on the 75 man roster. 53 + 6 = 59 which leaves 16 guys who are still on the team that are gonna be axed by next week that arent even gonna make the practice squad.

I agree. If SD wants to put them on the PS, they'd sure keep them around for the last preseason game to get a good look at them. This group of cuts are done in San Diego. None of them will be on the PS.

Not so sure I agree with that. If your team is THIS deep and you've got a guy you are trying to slip through to the PS - hiding him in the 1st group of cuts might not be such a bad tactic.

We'll know one way or the other by next Monday/Tuesday. :)

I'll bet you $100 boltcash bucks that none of the cuts today make the practice squad.
