A 27-year-old San Diego woman who had an affair with former Charger Chris Chambers has been charged with 11 misdemeanor counts for allegedly stalking and harassing the wide receiver’s family.
Stacey Bernice Saunders is due in court Jan. 19 for arraignment, said Paul Levikow, a spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office.
Chambers’ wife, Christina, told San Diego police in April that Saunders was harassing her with phone calls. Two months later, Chambers requested a temporary restraining order against Saunders, saying she has “launched an incessant attack verbally on me, and now my wife, her mother and sister.”
He characterized the calls, text messages and e-mails as “abusive, vulgar and irrational.”
In the court papers, Chambers acknowledged having an affair with Saunders. The request for a restraining order was dropped when neither Chambers nor Saunders showed up for a hearing in late June. A week later, Chambers filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Levikow said the District Attorney’s stalking unit investigated the case and decided to file the charges. The 11 counts accuse Saunders of stalking or harassing by phone on various dates from April through September.
Because the charges are misdemeanors, Saunders was not arrested, Levikow said. She was notified in a letter sent last week. She could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Chambers, 31, joined the Chargers in a midseason trade from Miami in 2007. He was released Nov. 2 and said at the time that his off-field troubles contributed to the team’s decision to let him go.
He was picked up by Kansas City and scored a touchdown in the Chargers’ 43-14 win over the Chiefs Sunday.
