From reading the comments on this article and many others, it seems the general football fan believes the following about the Chargers:

    - They are overrated and will be worse this year.
    - They talk too much.
    - Norv Turner sucks as a head coach and was lucky last year.
    - The Chargers do not have what it takes to get past the Colts or the Patriots.
    - The Chargers always fold in big games.

I hope we can prove them wrong.

"It's easy to jump to generalizations and conclusions," Turner said. "You have to analyze why things happen or didn't happen. And I laugh because we're backed up against Indianapolis, and there's something like a minute-and-a-half, a minute-fifty left, and we had a lot of guys out. So we run it three times, and say, 'Let's punt, get it off and see if we can win this game doing that.'

"We were in a game like that in 1997 against Dallas, and if we had won we would've made the playoffs. We punted, got off a 23-yard punt and two plays later they score. (Against the Colts) we punted, and Mike (Scifres) hits a 63-yard punt.

"So if a guy gets off a great punt you're a smart coach; if a guy gets off a bad punt you screwed the thing up. You have to accept that."

Maybe. But if you believe Smith gambled on his head coach, you also have to accept that he won.

I hope they think that. It will be so much more satisfying when we hoist the Lombardi!

Changing people's opinions is difficult and so long as we keep winning people can say what they want.

There's a general lack of respect for SoCal outside of our humble environs. We'll just have to teach them some proper manners. I think people are over stating Newberry's vulnerablities. He risks injury like any other on the field, but as far as his knee joints go they will fall apart quickly when they do. There isn't any sign of that, yet. He held up for most of last season and not much appears to have changed so far. The light practice schedule should keep him on his feet-that and cortisone and NSAIDS. Barring the bad luck that can injure all players, his risks are the same as anyone's. Newberry is a capable center and will anchor the line well enough with occasional rest from Witherow. He started 14 games last year. He's being depended on for six at the outside unless Hardwick is IR'd, then in that case he is just as capable of starting 12-14 games as last year. Witherow can spell him against the less capable D Lines. At least that's how I see it.

The Chargers will prove them wrong, read on...

Okay...point by point, here we go:
Overrated - I don't think so, we have the best depth in the league across the board. Only a rash of injuries to key players at the end of the season kept us out of Arizona in February

Talk too much - Not this season, the players appear to have figured this one out..their tone is understated and focused so far.

Norv sucks(?) - Again, I don't think so. He got this team within one game of the Super Bowl after a very chaotic coaching change and some crazy expectations.

Can't get past Colts / Pats - Haven't we beaten the Colts more than they have beaten us lately? Unlike week 2 of 2007 the Pats will be in our house, facing a team that knows what it is doing and matches up better personnel-wise than last year.

Fold in big games - After a 1 -3 start, we had a lot of "must win" games last season. Also for the first time in 12 years we won 2 playoff games including beating Indy in their house with our second stringers on offense at the end.

Yeah "general fan", doubt the power of the lightning bolts...when you see a bright flash, the burning smell will be you...and whatever team is playing the Chargers.

By the way, isn't Clark Judge a well known knucklehead?

    Go Chargers!
