I’m trying to make sense of Clary’s performance in St. Louis. He played so well at the end of last year, it just doesn't add up.

It’s been reported that during the regular season Clary spends a lot of time studying opponents, my question is; does our preseason/training camp format allow for studying of a position opponent? Along the same lines, did the Rams’ horrible outing the week before have an affect on their DL play calling for our game? Could it be that Clary (and others) was just trying to get though the game without injury?

The bottom line, what the hell went wrong?

I know what went wrong. I was out of town and unable to watch the game.

Clary may just be going through a little bit of a sophmore slump.

Or Clary isn't that good when matched up against a top 5 DE

to be honest I think this is a bit out of proportion since even the best OTs have trouble with Little, and sometimes players have bad games. I'm more interested in how he recovers against the seahawks this weekend.

Little did the same thing against Olivea last year.

In fact, the Bolts QBs were sacked and harassed as much this game as they were last year's game versus the Rams in preseason.

Just like when Merriman and Phillips give opposing OTs fits, Little is one of those guys that gives opposing tackles fits.

Good call, slug. But the coaches are talking about Clary and they did not like what they saw. L.J. Shelton is a more experienced starting tackle that backs up Marcus McNeil and he is gunning for Clary's spot. I think both will get extended playing time against the Seahawks and I'm looking forward to see who plays better. Whoever can impress the coaches should get the starting tackle spot.

i can agree that little is a very very good DE but i think i can name 5 that are better than him

    Jason Taylor
    Mario Williams
    Jaren Allen
Osy Umenyura [prob. spelt it wrong]
    Dwight Freeney/Julius Peppers/Patrick Kenry

Overall clary is a better back up than starter, but i mean who could we pursue to replace him in the starter roll?

I'm wondering where you culled this bit of information. You said on another thread that "the coaches are complaining" about Clary. Where'd you hear that?

You're right, Ant. And I'm not throwing Clary under the bus. But his performance largely sucked Sat. night. Better luck next week.

L.J. Shelton? I mean we pulled him in and he WANTS Clary's spot. Let's see how both do this MNF.

Clary struggled at first, but he got a lot better as the game went on. After he got beat early, he buckled down and shut Little down.

With regards to the opponent studying, my guess is that the starters spend little if no time studying opponents and game-planning for pre-season games.

So if Clary's strong play last season did in fact have to do with his pre-game studies, it seems a likely explanation that he struggled this time because he didn't study.

    Perhaps here:

I personally thought he did OK after a shaky start, but I'm obviously in the minority.

I thought so too and found it suspicious that there wasn't a direct quote but then I remember hearing the talk of L.J. Shelton replacing Clary before the first preseason game so it's not just writer's conjecture. Still, I say keep a close eye on both this Monday and then start talking starters.

I'd still like to see an actual quote from a coach to that effect.

I do know that LJ Shelton was brought in as OT depth after Cory Lekkerkerker was released this offseason.

By the way, Lekkerkerker was picked up by the Cowboys and played against the Bolts in week 1 of the preseason.

Like a Shaq quality rapper or Busta Rhymes quality?

Yeah, the reason was for depth and he came cheap and brings experience.

All Shelton has shown that he wants is another 12 piece KFC family bucket.

There was a reason that he was not asked to come back to the Dolphins even though they had the worst o-line in the NFL last year.

Can you agree that if the QB had stepped up into the pocket this conversation wouldn't be taking place? :icon_sad:
