    Colts cut Bob Sanders

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 18, 2011, 11:30 AM EST

Bob Sanders, the safety whose tremendous talent has been overshadowed by his inability to stay healthy, has been released by the Indianapolis Colts.

Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed the news on Twitter, thanking Sanders for his contributions to the team, noting that he had a Super Bowl interception and a defensive player of the year award to his credit.

When he’s healthy, Sanders is nothing short of one of the best players in the NFL. He had an impact on the Colts’ defense that few players in the league can match, which is why at the end of the 2007 season he was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year and rewarded with a contract that made him the league’s highest-paid safety.

But he just hasn’t been able to stay on the field since then: In the last three seasons Sanders has played in nine regular-season games and missed 39.

Sanders has indicated that he knows he’s going to need to take a pay cut, and the Colts may still be able to re-sign him. But first he’ll test the free agent market. He’s free to sign, right now, with any team that’s willing to take a chance on a talented but injury-plagued former star.

"Yes, let get him before anyone realizes that he is available. He will be a valuable asset to the offense, and it will only cost a few million to pick him up and put him on the roster. Plus, I heard that he no longer considers himself a locker room cancer."

Good call man. With all the injuries we had last year our injury squad sure could use a captain.

Correction....GREAT player, but he just can't stay healthy.

Nobody is going to give him a huge contract. And as our FS position couldn't possible get any worse I think we should absolutely look into to him as a short term stop gap, with the potential upside that he could be a homerun and the new leader of our defense.

THIS is a player that I believe we should take a risk on

Yes, hasn't played a full season since 2007, hasn't played more then 8 games since. Numerous injuries all over the place

    BUT

when he is healthy he's mentioned in the same breath as Polamalu and Reed. He's an absolute game changer and an incredible talent.

For a team friendly contract (he earned a crapton of money on IR over last few years), he could fill a hole that has not been able to be filled since Rodney left. And worst case scenario if he gets injured then we do have Darrell Stuckey waiting to potentially fill the hole. But at least with Sanders we have another option and one that could blossom into a hell of a pick up.

It's high risk but very very high reward.

If he isn't up to your standards, Adam Schefter is reporting the Rams cut S O.J. Atogwe - he's a pretty good FS

I would very much like to see him play for us. The sad probability is that he will be the first one on our team to go down.

My thought is lets take a look at Atogwe and pass on Sanders. After the CBA is signed and delivered that is.

Atogwe is a free safety, he would make sense only if Weddle didn't return. We need a strong safety

I agree with Ant. Worth the risk, sign him to a short, team friendly contract.

Take OJ. I'd rather see Naanee rockin' the hair, and besides, I can't really picture Sanders in a Charger uniform.. I just.. can't.

I say sign both OJ and Sanders. Line them up deep and see who comes out on top, right?
