NFL Rumors: Colts wanted to draft Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning

BY BRYAN ROSE - JAN 21ST, 2014 AT 12:51 PM

You may recall back in 1998, both Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf were the interchangeable number one pick in the NFL Draft. The Colts eventually selected Manning out of Tennessee and the San Diego Chargers, picking second, selected Leaf.

Manning of course has went on to have a Hall of Fame career while Leaf is quite possibly the biggest draft bust in NFL history.

But how different would things have been if not for Leaf’s reluctance to play in Indianapolis, who according to power agent Leigh Steinberg, wanted to draft the Washington State product.

Leaf wasn’t interested in playing for the Colts according to Steinberg and did everything he could to sabotage their interest in him, including skipping a scheduled meeting with Indianapolis.

“No way do I want to play in Indianapolis,” he told me, referring to the Colts, who owned the No. 1 pick. Instead, because of the exceptional weather and the more laid-back lifestyle, he preferred the San Diego Chargers, who would go second.

“That’s fine,” I warned him, “but the way to achieve this is not exactly going to help your image. You’ll get a lot of criticism.” Ryan didn’t care about his image, though, only his destination.

Talk about a thin line between success and failure for the Colts.

Yeah, in an alternative Universe, Ryan Leaf a heralded future HOFer and already a Lombardi Trophy MVP is heading into his 2nd SB appearance with the Indianapolis Broncos and Peyton Manning is serving a 10 year sentence for breaking and entry, and for stealing prescription drugs

Crappy article and much ado about nothing. Even if Jim had met with Leaf, it was nothing more than posturing. He was going Peyton Manning the whole time.

All what-ifs but Doctor Chao was named by players -including Leaf- for hooking them.

Leaf was (obviously) not the right kind of person to deal with horrible situations after having the easy life but that Chargers situation at the time was the worst in Football; a couple years earlier, Old man Spanos stubbornly refused to bonus vet players like Seau before the new cap rules hit and Beathard quit over it. He only returned after being paid a mint and Old Man Spanos stepping down from operations but that is why all the weird reaches and trades...he was playing money ball without the actual math. So...Leaf had the worst receivers ever assembled on a field and mixed with his attitude and history AND a complex offensive Head Coach (Gillbride) with no HC skills, he made fans not even notice how schit his team was (Chao's pain relievers came in handy I bet). After Leaf made a come back to go from 3rd to starter, Riley (who was no fan of Leaf's) tried to explain to the angry media that Leaf was doing fine but the receivers were running the wrong routs. Yea a dichhead, but there's more to it than what is remembered

Preposterous, says former Colts G.M. Bill Polian.

Polian appeared on ESPN Radio and said many reasons led the Colts to chose Manning over Leaf, and Steinberg and Leaf didn't have that kind of pull.

“Agents cannot manipulate anything in the draft,” Polian said. “Leigh and other agents for years and years have told kids that they can get players drafted by a certain club at a certain spot, and nothing could be further from the truth. That assumes that we on the club side are idiots, that we’re able to be manipulated, that we don’t do our homework, that we don’t watch the tape, that we don’t go all the way back to the junior high school coach and high school principal, teachers, doing our due diligence. It’s just the kind of hubris that existed among agents years ago where they told kids flat-out, ‘I can get you taken here, I can get you taken there.’ Nothing could be further from the truth.”

The Colts chose Manning, the Chargers took Leaf--and soon came to regret it.

“He was in terrible shape — he couldn’t even complete the jog around the field at the start of practice,” Beathard told ESPN radio. “It was a disaster from the start and I’m responsible for it."

Also remember reading a few years back that Polin asked Manning what he was going to do after being drafted and he replied, "get the playbook and start studying". Leaf when asked the same question, "Going to Vegas!"
