The most powerful warrior usually does not posses the most powerful brain...dumb move. If he's sacrificing his career for just one superbowl ring that defense better start making tackles. They need to go, "hey! I'm being a ***** and this guy has two torn ligaments! What reason do I have for avoiding contact?"

I agree that Merriman is a

    WARRIOR
    .

I'm willing to cut Merriman some slack. It is his body, only he knows the kind of pain he's feeling, I'll support his decision 100%.

I have a hard time believing a guy as smart as he is would jeopardize his career like this. I'm beginning to wonder how hurt he really is.

I do too...and I truly hope that this is the magic switch we all talk about. It's not too far-fetched to think that his presence, his intensity will somehow lift their spirits and get them to do their job right?

Even before his injuries Lavar Arrington was no where near as good as Merriman.

    GO CHARGERS!

Even though all the doctors he's consulting are saying that he needs surgery, they all pretty much say that he can play on the knee this season. The Chargers doctors have also cleared him to play. Of course there is a career ending risk, but he knows that If he misses the season and has reconstructive surgery, he potentially will lose millions after 2009. So better he plays now, hope he doesn't do more damage to the knee and wins the Super Bowl.

Enjoy it while he's here folks because he will NOT be a Charger after 2009.

...Mountain Dew is never RIGHT, he sometimes just gets lucky.

I honestly never thought this was going to happen but Kevin Acee did accurately predict this during an interview on the football network or ESPN, I forget which one. He stated that EVERYTHING Shawne has ever told him he would do, he followed through on. His prediction, Shawne would start the season "playing", then take it from there, game by game. I hope it works out for him and he doesn't have to look back on it with regret

It's probably going to push him out of San Diego because unless he goes down big time injured his price has gotten pushed up through the roof.

Actually LaVar's career went south after suffering a complete rupture of his Achilles tendon, and then he got into a serious motorcycle accident last year.

His knee injuries had nothing to do with it, and they weren't even the same type of knee injuries as what Merriman has with his knee.

...Or we can hope and dream that he takes less to stay in America's Greatest City, like Dielman did. Cro might wind up asking for half of California for all we know, so you never know. Shawne does seem to love San Diego and his teammates. :bolt:

If he starts, then goes under the knife for temporary repair, maybe he only misses part of the season.

get him healthy for the playoffs

Not my battle, and I respect his heart and desire to go out there and suck it up like this.

However, he is a certified headcase for even considering this. If Shawne was 32 or 33, and was looking at making one last run at this thing, I could understand playing through it. However, he is still in his mid 20's, plays on a team that has the capabilities for a few more deep runs, and has a contract extension to look forward to.

This is one of those instances where one really good thing could happen, but 3 or 4 bad ones could too. Somebody close to him needs to have a sit down with Shawne. This could impair his career, his earnings, and his future.

Because that would look horribly bad to bench/IR a player who says he can go and wants to go - even if its not because they want to secure better sign ability it will be portrayed as this sort of issue.

And Chris he sat down with four doctors in four separate locations - trust me someone definitely told him this could end his career and he still chose to do it.

This is where Norv needs to step up!!!

No matter how much Merriman says he's ready to play, Norv needs to limit his time on the field.

usually its always up to the player, he will probably sign a waiver like TO did in the superbowl, right now its up to Manning whether he is going to play that 1st game too, its all up to the player

I think he's crazy. But I figure, if he can tough it out this year and protect his knee from cheap shots and away from the denver line, and then gets surgery after the 08 season, then he's out for 09, but can't we tag him at the end of that season and see how he's recovered in 10? Then put together an offer. Sounds reasonable to me. We lose him for a year, he loses FA for a year. I dunno.

Why? Norv and the team have said since this whole thing started that they expected him to be able to go from game one. Something has been fishy with this whole thing IMO.

    It's all about the money.

It doesn't pay to lock horns with AJ.

naw if its up to the player then its on him, nothing to do with Norv, and when Norv has been saying he is thinking Merriman is goign to be there opening day then he was right

The injury is NOT career threatening. Shawne said it himself.

I'm pretty sure the "career threatening" crap is coming by way of his agent, Tom Condon.

I'm also starting to believe that Kevin Acee's "Merriman will not be a Charger after his contract expires" quote also came from Tom Condon, and not anyone in the Chargers organization.

This whole thing has been a circus for days and I've come to suspect it was all orchestrated by Condon. Why did Merriman need to see FOUR specialists? Condon is setting up his client to look like the ultimate warrior, and if, just in case, something happens to his client, it looks like the Chargers' medical staff is incompetent.

There's something about this whole thing that has been wrong from the start. The article comes out that Merriman is taking a gig at FOX where he'll be a panelist for their pre-game show DURING the season; and it seemed like 5 minutes later the Acee article came out that the Chargers are frustrated with Shawne's off-the-field focus and that we can all take it to the bank that Merriman will NOT be a Charger after his contract expires. Then, about 5 minutes after that it comes out that Merriman's knee is bothering him and he has to go see a specialist... then another specialist, then another specialist, then another specialist.

And none of these specialists can say a word about what they told Merriman because of doctor-patient privelege, so Merriman can say whatever and Condon can feed quotes to the media saying whatever. Yet, despite the fact that all four of these specialists were supposedly unanimous in their agreement that Shawne need reconstructive surgery and that the injury is supposedly career-threatening, despite that Shawne decides to ignore all that advice and go with the Chargers' original prognosis? Yeah, that makes sense.

This feels like it's an orchestrated event, not a series of random coincidences.

I wonder if the Chargers were close to a contract extension with Shawne and then those talks broke down, and right after that we suddenly start getting this flood of news about Merriman.
