    ... using your computer.

There's this program that was developed at Berkeley called BOINC which allows scientific entities to transmit massive amounts of data to hundreds of thousands of public volunteer computers. I have this installed on four PCs ranging from very slow to very fast. It runs on all of them and I have yet to notice any effect on system performance whatsoever. It basically only uses available processor and GPU resources, on the fly. Also it only transmits data over your internet connecting at the beginning and end of each process so additional bandwidth consumption is almost null.

There are projects ranging from analyzing protein structures and disease research, to predicting earthquakes and the weather, to physics and cosmology.
