    Cutler is a punk?

    By Kevin Acee

    Wednesday Decenber 24, 2008

During my turn guest-hosting yesterday on XX 1090, Matt Wilhelm came on the show, and I suggested at the start of the interview, "Jay Cutler is a punk, isn't he?"

I was joking. I mean, I think Jay Cutler is arrogant and off-putting, but I was totally joking and never expected a response. I was saying it for a laugh. I had suggested the same thing in an earlier interview with Clinton Hart.

But Wilhelm, who is a great interview, took my suggestion and ran.

"He is a punk," Wilhelm said. "I'm just not a huge fan of his."

Wilhelm compared Philip Rivers and Jay Cutler, saying both were leaders and wanted to win badly.

"But Jay Cutler," Wilhelm said, "he and Tony Gonzalez are the biggest crybabies in the league."

I already knew the story, but I asked Wilhelm again about he, Shaun Phillips and Rivers taunting Cutler from the sideline in last year's Dec. 24 game against the Broncos.

"Jay Cutler, being the guy that he is, made some shrewd comments to SP and myself," Wilhelm recalled of the in-game dialogue. "Brandon Marshall was making comments throughout the game. All these comments are being made, and they're not making plays. Yet they're the ones going home, and we're preparing for our playoff game. It was essentially a wave to him good-bye and hopefully have a great offseason."

    What did Cutler say?

"If I could, I would say them," Wilhelm said. "But they're unfit for ... radio. They're something that probably only happens on the football field or when you're extremely, extremely angry at someone."

Which prompted me to bring up the point that Rivers never curses.

"Philip Rivers is not only one of the best football players I've ever met in my entire life. He is one of the best people off the field," Wilhelm said. "... He'a family man. He's in church every sunday. That's it. That's all you really get is golly and darn. Never a swear word. Never anything rude and crude as I mentioned have been said by one person. It never comes out of Philip's mouth.

"The competitive nature in Philip is to the utmost degree. He wants to win so bad and maybe do a little showboating while he's at it."

War of words continues to rage on between AFC West rivals

    Wednesday, December 24, 2008

While Shaun Phillips declared himself off-limits for interviews and Philip Rivers remained, as always, above the fray, one member of the Goodbyegate trio acknowledged what many other Chargers are thinking.

“There is no love lost in this locker room for Jay Cutler,” linebacker Matt Wilhelm said of the Denver Broncos quarterback.

That is not exactly news. Ever since last Christmas Eve's game at Qualcomm Stadium, when in the final minutes Wilhelm, Phillips and Rivers were caught by ESPN taunting Cutler from the sideline, there has been a steady flow of words both ways between the AFC West rivals.

Most of that talk has been from Cutler and his teammates about their disdain of Rivers. Asked Wednesday if, in the holiday spirit, he wanted to extend an olive branch to Rivers, Cutler declined.

“Are you asking me to retract my statements? No, I'm not going to,” Cutler said. “He's playing really well right now. But what happened has happened and I haven't forgotten it. I don't think a lot of guys on this team have forgotten it. So it is what it is.”

Wilhelm, among others, finds it preposterous that Cutler has said again and again he doesn't like the way Rivers acts on the field. According to Chargers players then and now, it was trash talking and gestures by Cutler last year that precipitated Wilhelm and Phillips waving goodbye to Cutler and Rivers yelling it in Cutler's direction.

“Jay Cutler, being the guy that he is, made some shrewd comments to SP and myself,” Wilhelm recalled of the in-game dialogue. “Brandon Marshall was making comments throughout the game. All these comments are being made, and they're not making plays. Yet they're the ones going home, and we're preparing for our playoff game. It was essentially a wave to him goodbye and hopefully have a great offseason.”

    What did Cutler say?

“If I could, I would say them,” Wilhelm said. “But they're unfit for radio. They're something that probably only happens on the football field or when you're extremely, extremely angry at someone.”

Said Wilhelm: “He is a punk. I'm just not a huge fan of his.”

Rivers was asked Wednesday if there remained any problem between he and Cutler.

“There really isn't,” he said. “It got a lot of attention a year ago. There's nothing there. I know Jay feels the same way – we're not playing each other. We're trying to help our teams advance to the playoffs.”

    Turnover profits

It is no coincidence the Chargers have eight takeaways during their three-game winning streak.

That's more than a third of their season total, and five of the takeaways have resulted in 31 points – one interception return, three offensive touchdowns and one field goal on the ensuing drives.

The lack of turnovers is as much to blame as anything for the Chargers not having won more games this season.

No statistic illustrates that more than the fact the Chargers have the third-most points of turnovers (108) despite ranking 15th in number of takeaways (22).

“(Turnovers) are huge shifts,” Rivers said. “Any time you get good field position and a momentum swing like that, it's huge, and it seems like we do something with it.”

    Nuts 'n' Bolts

    – Shawne Merriman was at practice, watching and moving pretty well. Merriman said later that his rehabilitation is going “amazing” and he in better shape than at any time in his career.

    – Nose tackle Jamal Williams (sprained foot) did not practice. He is expected to play against the Broncos. Receiver Malcom Floyd (collapsed lung) worked on the side for the first time but will miss Sunday's game. Defensive end Igor Olshansky (illness) did not practice. Linebacker Anthony Waters (hamstring) returned to practice.

    – The Broncos have the fifth-highest margin of defeat (16 points) in their seven losses and fifth-lowest margin of victory (8.13) in their eight wins. The Chargers have the lowest margin of defeat (4.25) in their eight losses and 11th-highest margin of victory (13.57) in their seven wins.

    – The Chargers can't even consider breaking NFL rules to wear their powder blue uniforms Sunday. The jerseys were auctioned off after the Chargers Dec. 4 game against Oakland.

    Matt EFFIN Wilhelm.

    STFU u loser.

Of all people to come out with this crap a few days before the game, Matt freakin Wilhelm!. :icon_evil:

Like RTL said the sooner we see the back of this lad the better. If nothing else it just illustrates how dumb he really is to fall for Acee's hook.

I look forward to seeing Tatum Bell run right over him. Oh forget that, I forgot, Matt will be the guy taking no angle and diving to the turf catching air again. :icon_rofl:

Let's hope he doesn't see the field after this rubbish.

As long as newspapers or radiostations need to earn money,
those kind of interviews will spread around. It's part of the storyline around every game, exspecially division rivals.

This game will be hot because of Hochhuli's mistake in Denver
so some smack talk by Wilhelm isn't useful. But as long as someone plays for the Bolts I will stay to him. The team wins and the team loses.

Go Chargers. You're pride is on the line on Sunday.

    PS.
a Punk is for me a dark eyed gothic fan or with colored iroquise hair. Cutler looks more familiar like a big baby with a gay haircut. So crybaby fits better than punk for me.

To be fair, though, he was answering a question.

    Acee shouldn't have baited him.

    Uhhhhh....I don't.

Why would you look forward to that?

I had to double check your post after reading this part to see if it was Casino Royale posting it even though I thought it was Dublin Bolt at first.

That's the reporters job--to ask question that will elicit a newsworthy response. It's Wilhelm's job to sidestep those sorts of questions like the true professionals do.

I have the feeling that people wouldn't hate Cutler so much if he didn't look the part of a total doofus.

I mean... seriously-- Remember Andre "Bad Moon" Rison"?

Cutler's nickname ought to be "Bad Hair Day".

And kind of like Eli, Cutler frequently has this look on his face that says "Duuuuuuhhhhh! Which way did they go?!?"

He resembles a guy who went to sleep in the Third Grade, and woke up 15 years later with no knowledge of what's transpired over the last decade-and-a-half. He appears half-asleep, and like he doesn't comprehend what's going on around him.

IMO, all of this adds to how EASY it is to dislike him.

The guy is baked. Stoned to the bone.

Why doesn't the media say that Cutler grabbed his junk and told the Chargers to suck his whang which illicited Rivers giving it back to him ?

I want to see Cutler bleed just like Garcia but worse. Jamal needs blast him in the balls. Make him pisss blood.

What a way to end the year. Fck the Broncos.

If you need something like this to psych you up when the AFC Title is up for grabs, and with that the only way to make the playoffs, then there is something wrong already.
