Does anybody know his contract status? Is he a free agent after this year?

1 year, 540,000 contract. Should be an RFA next year. 100 to 1 he holds out and AJ reduces a first and 3rd round to a 6th round tender.

That's assuming it's still AJ's decision, but I'm not holding my breath on that just yet.

AJ won't be here next year. You can celebrate that.

I guess we will see what our new GM does. This will be a good test.

We're all getting mancrushes on a guy that has had 5, yes five surgeries
on just one of his knees. That alone will be enough to lowball Alexander.
He will walk on his 5x surgically repaired knee to another team this offseason.
    Hope I'm wrong.

I'd be tempted to take that bet since you are assuming AJ will be around - despite your posts elsewhere you seem to have crawled into AJ's skivvies...? C'mon - admit it...

Just like in the other thread, you're confusing a lack of confidence in Dean with a homosexual mancrush (I guess that's what you're inferring) on AJ.

No big contracts, I'd rather not give another injured player who had a huge year with us a big contract (see Gaither, Jared - without the laziness)

Ant, I'd like to see us go back to the business of building a winning team through the draft then actually keeping them rather than acting like a farm team for the rest of the NFL to snarf up. JMHO

I would like to see him get a 3 year contract with performance and injury clauses. He can be good, but we need to protect ourselves.

Is he an RFA if we didn't draft him? I'm 99% sure he's not.

I'm not suggesting that we cut him loose, I'm suggesting we don't take half of a season as a belief that what you see now will be the basis of what we can do if we give him a big contract. Keep him, give him a raise, don't give him money that puts the Chargers in a bad position if he has one more injury to his knee, where he's had five surgeries already, and can't play anymore. There's got to be a middle ground

While I agree on Gaither, and several other F/As - when you have worked a kid for 3 or 4 years and know what you have got - its time to pay him reasonably based upon current market - or watch him walk away and play for someone else. Your bottom line made perfect sense to me - there has GOT to be a middle ground.

On Alexander - sign him if you can do so for a reasonable price - he has been pretty darn good over the last 6 or 7 weeks - and cannot ignore his own injury history.

Keeping Weddle is sure paying off now eh?

I really like Alexander, but damn...five surgeries on one knee? Hope he likes San Diego and Rivers and will compromise during negotiations. You would think playing on real turf in warm weather should be a selling point.

It's all relative to what they'd give him.

Obviously I wouldn't want to see them make him the highest paid WR in the game, but I also would like to see them give him a raise if that's what it takes to keep him.

We can't be scared of signing those that are actually producing, especially at a position of need, just because we were burned by Gaithers in the past.

With VB, Royal and Meach back in the fold next year keeping D-Ax would make sense because he wouldn't have to carry the load. I didn't mention having M-80 to throw at either, who is having a great year staying off the injury report. The Bolt's could have one hell of a receiving corp next year, just work on that offensive front and let er rip!!!!

I'm pretty sure that you need 4 or more accrued seasons to be an unrestricted FA, no matter your history with other teams. ie just cause you get cut and picked up by another squad, that doesn't make you unrestricted.

    The latest CBA states:
"Any Veteran player with three Accrued seasons, but less than four Accrued seasons shall, at the termination of his last Player Contract during such period, become a Restricted Free Agent."

Alexander’s been a consistent performer, we need to keep him – with that said, we also need to protect ourselves with his contract, considering his injury history and the fact that McNeil & Gaither both turned into stiffs after collecting their big paydays from us.

What Alexander has done since he's been here is incredible. Must keep him, but like others said we must protect ourselves and I hope he can understand that.

I wouldn't be surprised not to see either Meachem or Royal here next year. I just can't see one of them here next year for some reason.

He seems to have the chemistry with Philip like VJ did.....he seems to be that "go to guy".....
Now saying that., the Chargers organization will find a way to let him go.

It's been fun Danario., and we know you like being here..., but we just think you're a little too good for our own good. Meachem and Royal seem to fit into our scheme a lot better....because that's how we roll.
Now go find yourself another team and win a SuperBowl....Buh-bye. :notworthy:

Restriction is determined solely off of total number of accrued seasons (on IR does count as an accrued season if he made the final 53 man roster prior to being put on IR). If the player hasn't accrued 4 seasons of veteran-cy, then his free agency is restricted in some capacity or another.

Not saying you're wrong, but Spotrac had him listed as UFA.

I'm just saying, I trust the verbatim text of the Collective Bargaining Agreement over anything else. 3 accrued seasons equals restricted free agency. It was the same way with the Niners and Larry Grant, who was originally drafted by the Rams, then released and picked up by San Fran, last year when he only had 3 seasons accrued.

He was a UFA right up until he signed with us. This is probably part of why he was given a 1 year deal.

I'm just thinking we keep the WRs we've got, no need to go out and get any more even in the draft.
Meachem & Royal (price tag and cap hit)
    Floyd, D'Ax & Spurlock (skills)
Brown (let's see what he can do)

I don't see the need for this kind of pessimism when we don't even know who will be in charge of personnel moves when it comes time to make the decision.

Of course, I guess if you're the pessimistic type you're already convinced AJ will still be here next year no matter what, so there's that.

Franchise tag him. No one else is playing as good as of late.
